Overview:

We are seeking a Skilled Craft Supervisor who will lead, manage, and direct activities performed by crews of various craft disciplines such as electricians, carpenters, pipefitters, laborers, millwrights, power equipment operators, utility mechanics, and other support craft. This position is a valuable part of our Facilities and Operations Directorate and resides in the Utilities Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL).In this position you will supervise a team of skilled craft which performs excavations of all utility systems (potable water, sanitary sewer, natural gas, compressed air, steam, chilled water, storm systems) on-site for repairs as directed. The Supervisor will coordinate, plan and schedule work with a strong focus on safety and customer service. Coordination, planning, and task preparation with customers and other support personnel are critical to ensure that work is conducted in a safe and efficient manner.

Supervisors ensure that work tasks are properly assigned. Supervisors work closely with management to support administrative functions (training needs, timekeeping, absence control, performance evaluation, and feedback, etc.). Supervisors are also expected to maintain a business culture that focuses on meeting the needs of the Laboratory, to take an active role in safety talks, as well as execution of the craftwork agreement. Supervisors are responsible for on-the-job training, reviewing work activity, and evaluating the performance of craft workers.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Lead/Coordinate projects simultaneously that impact multiple disciplines and customers
  • Establish and maintain a business culture that focuses on meeting the needs of customers, ensuring they are fully informed about programmatic and corrective maintenance tasks, schedules, status, delays, etc. to minimize operational impacts. This ensures service needs are met promptly and cost-effectively.
  • Ensure that work tasks are properly analyzed and graded according to ORNL work control procedures.
  • Ensure work is conducted safely, securely, and in compliance with Laboratory policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Participate in incident reporting, safety walk-downs, audits, assessments, and corrective action management where applicable.
  • Responsible for the supervisory administrative functions including training, timekeeping, development, discipline, performance evaluation, and feedback, etc.
  • Responsible for on-the-job training, reviewing work activity, and evaluating performance and qualifications of craft workers.
  • Accountable for staff performance and ensuring their actions are compliant with all company policies and processes.
  • Maintain an open and supportive working environment where staff report issues and concerns without fear of retribution.
  • Assist in preparation of planning documents including schedules, task material lists, inventory tracking, work orders, and job packages.
  • Ensure completeness of records necessary to maintain configuration control, equipment history, continuous operations, and regulatory reporting.

Basic Qualifications:
  • High school diploma with a minimum of nine years of journeyman experience, experience working on mechanical systems, or supervisory/lead experience.
  • Experience working with bargaining unit employees and ability to handle multiple jobs concurrently
  • Knowledge of excavation safety requirements
  • A valid Tennessee driver's license or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment is also a requirement for this position.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Applicants must have good interpersonal and communication skills, computer skills, organizational skills, environmental requirements/regulations, and the ability to develop positive customer relations
  • Experience in coordination of complex infrastructure work
  • Experience working with business systems and management controls at ORNL.
  • Ability to work and adapt amongst varying teams within a fast-paced, ever-changing environment
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of Utility systems and equipment.


Special Requirements:
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
