Introduction

The Department of Health Services (DHS) , Mendota Mental Health Institute (MMHI) is currently recruiting for a Special Education Teacher within the Mendota Juvenile Treatment Center (MJTC).

MMHI is located on the north side of Madison and offers a beautiful campus environment, convenient free parking and an onsite workout facility. MMHI is an inpatient psychiatric facility, with one outpatient program, specializing in serving patients with complex psychiatric conditions, often combined with certain problem behaviors. Position Summary

As the Special Education Teacher, you will provide educational services in the MJTC. This position is responsible for all individual education plan (IEP) documentation associated with the patient's status, including designing the draft and completing the final IEPs, and all IEP meeting responsibilities and requirements. Duties include:
  • Being the primary school liaison with the patient's family and/or guardian as appropriate. Instructional delivery is consistent with the Wisconsin Academic Standards for patients not yet graduated from high school.
  • Planning and delivering instruction as well as monitoring student progress for all instructional areas.
  • Providing consultative services to community agencies and schools in regard to education programs and services at the MJTC.

Salary Information

Starting salary is between $29.00 and $37.00 per hour ($60,300 and $76,900 per year), depending on qualifications. A 12-month probationary period is required. Add-on pay up to an additional $2.97 per hour is available for relevant educational credits that are above those required for certification.

Pay for current or former state employees is set based upon the rules that apply to compensation for the applicable transaction. The classification for this position is Teacher and pay schedule/range is 13/04.

Job Details

All applicants will be required to allow DHS to conduct a Caregiver background check to determine whether the circumstances of any convictions may be related to the job being filled.

All appointees will be required to receive a TB test, which will be administered by the facility or medical personnel directed by the facility within 30 days of the start date.

DHS does not sponsor work visas for this position, thus, in compliance with federal law, selected candidates will be required to verify eligibility to work in the United States by completing the required I-9 form upon hire.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have the following:
  • Licensure or eligible for licensure by the Department of Public Instruction in one of the following areas: Cross Categorical Special Education (1801), Emotional Behavioral Disability (1830), or Learning Disabilities (1811)
    • Eligible is defined as your license application is currently in progress with the WI Department of Instruction or you currently hold a license in one of the above categories in another state and are eligible to obtain licensure in the State of Wisconsin.
Well-qualified applicants will also have one or more of the following:
  • Experience working with students with significant behaviors and mental health needs.
  • Experience using trauma informed best practices which includes understanding the impact of trauma.
