Responsibilities

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for data science applications within the Office for Data Insights and Reporting (ODIR). This role involves developing, administering, and optimizing processes that integrate data science with academic decision support. Sets long-range goals, aligns data initiatives with the university's academic mission, and leads the strategic planning of resources and personnel. Key responsibilities include spearheading process improvements, managing advanced analytics applications, and fostering cross-functional collaboration to drive data-driven decision-making.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Manages the daily operations of advanced analytics in ODIR, exercising direction and supervision of all data science activities, including prioritization of subtasks required to meet deadlines and objectives. Addresses and resolves any technical or operational issues that arise during project execution.
  • Serves as the lead data scientist in ODIR by contributing directly to data science projects through model development, performing advanced data analysis, and generating insights. Engages in data cleaning, preprocessing, and transformation to ensure data readiness for analysis and modeling. Designs, implements, and validates predictive models and algorithms.
  • Working with the Director, manages the high-performance computing and personnel required to realize ODIR deliverables, including budget requests, hiring recommendations, and third-party subscriptions available to streamline workflows.
  • Works with ODIR team members to develop and manage project plans that leverage data science. Recommends and implements data science processes to optimize existing workflows including, but not limited to: forecasting, data virtualization, code-based report creation, and high-performance data visualizations.
  • Provides expert guidance on data science methodologies, tools, and technologies. Conducts code reviews and establish coding standards to maintain high-quality and maintainable reporting.
  • Oversees staff management including recruitment, direct supervision, conducting performance evaluations, reviewing compensation as appropriate, developing and ensuring completion of job-related education, managing corrective discipline process, and employee relations.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree required;
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • 4 years of relevant experience required;
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience required;
  • Experience with relational databases required;
  • Experience in a supervisory capacity preferred .
  • Proficiency with Python (or R), including common machine/deep learning libraries and their implementation required.
  • Fluency with data visualization tools, such as Tableau, Spotfire or PowerBI required.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, ability to develop creative solutions to complex problems and strong critical thinking skills required.
  • Strong analytic, qualitative and quantitative data analysis skills, with demonstrated ability to break down complex problems into phased deliverables required.
  • Ability to work independently and successfully complete assigned tasks on time with limited oversight required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, including the ability to describe data science concepts to lay/nonexpert audiences required.
  • Demonstrated skills in the production of dashboards that illustrate data science products using Shiny for Python, Observable (or d3.js equivalent), Plotly, or advanced Tableau capabilities preferred .
  • Demonstrated ability to leverage SQL to harmonize large data sets preferred .
  • Experience with Big Query preferred .

Pay Range

Pay Range: $86,482 - $129,723 Annually

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
