The Sr. Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Specialist, Utility Operations and Maintenance is responsible for driving, influencing, and achieving EHS process excellence, regulatory compliance, and overall risk reduction throughout Tesla's Utility Operations within North America. This role also supports the development and execution of global electrical safety programs. Reporting directly to the EHS Manager, Energy and Charging, the position is instrumental in upholding world-class safety standards and engages with senior regional leadership, utility customers and client, contracting partners, operational teams, and various departments within Tesla to facilitate continuous improvement and risk reduction.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a partnership with and become a trusted advisor on EHS matters to operational leaders and stakeholders, associates, customers, and contracting partners
  • Serve as an Electrical Safety technical expert to identify critical risks, including legal compliance requirements and responsibilities in all phases of product deployment, operation, and service, including specific support in the safe design and engineering, installation and construction, commissioning and operations, and preventative maintenance and repair of energy products
  • Lead the development, implementation, and execution of short and long-term plans for Tesla's Safety program for Utility Operations and Maintenance teams
  • Identify operational gaps and drive innovative EHS solutions across teams, involving key stakeholders in both electrical and other EHS areas
  • Be a visible model in the field and teach, train and coach business teams and support staff on fundamental EHS concepts and principles to reduce risk, and influence, inspire and empower business teams and staff to minimise the risk per our Tesla EHS vision, values and principles
  • Respond to and investigate EHS events and support the learning from events by determining causes and preventative actions with management and business teams
  • Collaborate with the Asset Management team to ensure all contractual deliverables and obligations are fulfilled. Lead EHS meetings with both internal and external customers to provide updates, share insights, and discuss performance in relation to EHS goals


Requirements
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive EHS experience in large-scale organizations and a relevant educational degree, or equivalent experience
  • Extensive experience in the electric power generation, transmission, storage, or distribution industries, with a preference for knowledge of large-scale lithium-ion battery storage
  • Practical experience in developing and implementing electrical safety programs according to NFPA70E standards
  • Ability to effectively execute role responsibilities in a fast-paced, growing global organization, using a 'first-principles' approach
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of engaging positively with all organizational levels, regulators, and third-party clients
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, multitasking, and prioritizing skills; ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Experience with North American EHS regulatory systems and policies, particularly in electrical installations and battery storage; proficiency in MS Office 365 Suite
