Position Summary

The Department of Hematologic Malignancies Translational Science at City of Hope is recruiting a full-time Staff Scientist to support research projects in the laboratory of Dr. Pamela Becker. This position is available immediately.

The Becker's lab focuses on novel therapy of acute myeloid leukemia (e.g.-RNA therapeutics) and drug resistance in blood cancers (e.g.-acute myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndrome, multiple myeloma) based on clinical features, mutations and gene expression, with use of high throughput functional screening/multicolor flow cytometry to directly assay drug response.

Key Responsibilities:

• Consult with Principal Investigator, academic researchers, pharmaceutical/biotech company researchers, and/or postdoctoral scholars on the nature and general plan of approach to basic research problems; perform a wide-variety of standard repetitive but highly specialized experimental procedures and techniques required for research projects; perform a limited variety of non-standard laboratory and experimental procedures requiring ingenuity, resourcefulness, and adaptability to special and changing needs of research; carry out in vitro experiments based on specified projects including examining new targeted therapies, genetic, and molecular biology techniques; modify, vary, or adapt standard procedures to meet the needs of research projects or improve tests that are unsatisfactory, and, after studying available literature, analyze and alter conditions under which determinations are made; participate in collaborative projects and/or project development activities involving multidisciplinary staff, by modifying, varying, or adapting standard procedures to meet project needs; assist Principal Investigator, academic researchers, and/or postdoctoral scholars with data collection and analysis, preparation of data for presentation, publication, and grant applications; and contribute to the completion of research project goals.

• Assist other research staff (e.g.-Research Associate) with daily laboratory flow, experiments, procedures and maintenance: ordering lab supplies and reagents, placing orders both on a routine and urgent basis, stocking and organizing the laboratory, and requesting equipment repairs/calibration as needed; request purchase requisitions with the Division Office when supplies are needed, ensure purchases are made and received, and provide packing slips for financial reconciliation; work with any student and trainee staff members working in the lab on any given project; may assist with training for new staff members, more junior staff, or collaborators on the techniques used by the lab to ensure adequate quality control; report to Principal Investigator of any issues related to equipment, supplies, or biosafety concerns; engage frequently with internal and external contacts on specific projects or subjects.

• The Specialist Series academic will also be encouraged to attend and present the results of their research at scientific conferences, participate in study meetings and interact with collaborative research groups; mentor and work with graduate and undergraduate students; develop and pursue their own research ideas; as well as develop and polish any skills and experiences that they feel will best prepare them for their career goals.



Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

• The Staff Scientist must possess, at a minimum, the U.S. equivalent Bachelor's or Master's degree in an appropriate discipline, and will often have a Ph.D. or other doctoral level degree.

• Background within molecular biology, cell biology, engineering, biology, chemistry, or related field.

• Experience managing multiple research projects

• Strong experience and interest in one or more of the following areas is required:

o Tissue culture with cell lines and primary cells

o Molecular biology techniques including preparation of DNA, RNA for sequencing or other analysis

o Western Blotting

o Flow cytometry analysis and fluorescence activated cell sorting

o Magnetic bead isolation devices

o In vitro drug sensitivity assays

o Familiarity with data analysis/statistics and graphics software

o In vivo xenograft or other models of leukemia
