Position Summary

A Staff Scientist position is available at the Beckman Research Institute of City of Hope in the laboratory of Prof. John Williams.

The Williams lab focuses on structure-based protein engineering and its application to generate next-gen biologics to address unmet therapeutic needs for cancer and T1D patients.

Ongoing efforts include the development and expansion of the meditope technology (discovered in the Williams lab), using it to address antigen escape (doi: 10.1136/jitc-2021-003752), the development and optimization of antibody-drug conjugates (doi: 10.1038/s41467-018-03976-5 and doi: 10.1021/acs.bioconjchem.8b00284), and pre-targeted imaging and treatment with radionuclides. The lab is also involved in the development of disease-activated biologics, including immunotherapeutics (technologies that led to the founding and development of Xilio Therapeutics, Inc.) and antibody and TCR discovery (combining single cell technologies and biophysics to produce biologics for novel targets: doi: 10.1016/j.immuni.2022.10.019).

The lab is well-funded and exceptionally equipped to rapidly advance discoveries to IND-enabling studies and the clinic.

Basic education, experience and skills required for consideration:

• Must have at a minimum, the U.S. equivalent Bachelor's or Master's degree in an appropriate discipline, and will often have a Ph.D. or other doctoral level degree.

• Requires expert knowledge in protein production (e. coli, insect cell, and mammalian), purification (including FPLC and HPLC chromatography), biophysical characterization (SPR, DSF, ITC), and structural biology (at a minimum, X-ray crystallography - cryoEM is a plus).

• Must keep meticulous notes and is expected to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

• Highly creative and productive, working harmoniously within a large team of graduate students, postdocs, research professors, and staff scientists. In return, the candidate will gain exposure to discovery, development, and IND-enabling work with the potential to develop life-saving medicines.
