Employer: IonQ, Inc
Industry: Quantum Platform
Salary: Competitive
Job type: Full-Time

IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ's computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

We are looking for a Staff Technical Program Manager. In this role, you will lead cross-functional programs developing our hybrid classical-quantum computing offering, improving our full-stack operational telemetry, and supporting our 24x7 quantum computing operations. You will have program-level decision-making authority and, along with it, the corresponding ownership for delivering successful outcomes.

We require the individual in this role to exert excellent leadership and communication skills. This person must be able to calmly lead their teams through high-ambiguity problems and overcome challenging obstacles. We also need a strategic thinker who can operationalize our approach to solving these problems and drive efficiencies that will enable us to scale this business.

This is a high-visibility role with ownership of the company's highest-priority initiatives. As such, it will routinely interact with C-level executives and key partners.

Responsibilities:
  • Own the end-to-end delivery of IonQ's next-generation hybrid classical-quantum offering. This will involve numerous cross-functional development threads in hardware, software, and firmware.
  • Collaborate with product management and technical leadership to transform a high-level product vision and architectural plan into a series of incremental milestones of delivered value.
  • Create and manage project timelines for aligned delivery along a series of upstream and downstream programs, establish key milestones and major deliverables, ensure resource alignment, and drive teams forward at a rapid pace.
  • Perform operational planning and budgeting to enable the successful execution of the program over the period of performance.
  • When projects encounter significant obstacles, roll up your sleeves, dive into details, and lead problem-solving efforts with a high sense of urgency and bias for action.
  • Coordinate and interface with all project dependencies, including other technical and non-technical teams, both internal and external to the company.
  • Create, write, and present concise, data-driven project status reports and presentations to senior management.

You'd be a good fit with:
  • 10+ years experience in managing projects and delivering technical/product goals within aggressive timelines
  • B.S. in physics, mathematics, engineering, computer science, or other technical field
  • Prior experience developing integrated software-hardware products (e.g., consumer electronics like smartphones, home assistants, or laptops)
  • Understanding of software development life cycle
  • Prior experience managing interdisciplinary projects in tools like Jira
  • The ability to lead technical teams through problems and situations with high levels of ambiguity
  • Demonstrated experience working in research and development in industry or at a national lab
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication skills

You'd be a great fit with:
  • 15+ years experience
  • PhD in Engineering or Science with preference in Quantum Computing, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science
  • PMP Certification
  • Comfort reading, understanding, and writing code
  • Prior professional experience developing software or firmware
  • Experience managing projects through the Product Development Lifecycle with formal gated reviews
  • Experience or training in quantum computing
  • Proficient executive presentation and communication skills
  • Ability to earn the trust and respect of technical stakeholders through consistency, communication and results
  • Experience in customer-facing technical roles
