Who We Are:

The Electromechanical & Optical Systems department of the Applied Physics Division at Southwest Research Institute conceives, develops, designs, and delivers specialized custom electrical, mechanical, and optical hardware system solutions to benefit the government, industry, and the public.

Objectives of this Role:

  • Support engineering staff and project managers on R&D projects in the areas of electrical, mechanical, and optical hardware systems design and testing.
  • Position provides opportunities to interact and be mentored by a team of experienced engineers and scientists.
  • Position provides opportunities to hone design, mechanical, optical, communication, and CAD technical skills in a supportive, creative, and learning-based environment.
  • Support government partners to innovate solutions not available in the commercial industry.

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities:

  • Mechanical design of simple to complex mechanisms and systems.
  • Supporting CAD modeling of concepts, as well as mature deliverable system designs.
  • Support the preparation of professionally written documentation describing engineering concepts, designs, and project results.
  • Contribute new ideas, approaches, and techniques towards solving assigned tasks and client problems.
  • Electro-Magnetic design of simple to complex mechanisms and systems.


Requirements:

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Physics or General Engineering.
  • 2 years: Engineering Curriculum
  • Strong communication skills
  • 0-2 years: SolidWorks and design experience
  • 0-2 years: Experimental testing setup.
  • A valid/clear driver's license is required.

Applicant selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen.
