SSRL is seeking a highly motivated Systems Administrator to be part of a dynamic scientific research environment. This is a truly hands-on position. You will be responsible for day-to-day system administration of the SSRL beam line Windows and Linux computers systems. This includes supporting systems hardware and software related to beam line operations and scientific data acquisition. You will provide information technology (IT) support and collaborate closely with our staff scientist, engineers, programmers and visiting scientific users to ensure computer system reliability, and a superior experience for our experimental users.
Your specific responsibilities include:
The expected pay range for this position is $104,000- $134,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

You will be responsible for day-to-day system administration of the SSRL beam line Windows and Linux computers systems. This includes supporting systems hardware and software related to beam line operations and scientific data acquisition. You will provide information technology (IT) support and collaborate closely with our staff scientist, engineers, programmers and visiting scientific users to ensure computer system reliability, and a superior experience for our experimental users.
Your specific responsibilities include:
- Install, manage, maintain operating systems, utilities, and applications software on beamline computer systems, including but not limited to Linux distributions and Windows systems.
- Resolve system issues with significant impact on the integrity of user data and the data acquisition systems with urgency, at times this includes work outside of normal working hours.
- Manage hardware and software modifications, troubleshooting, maintenance, backups, upgrades of operating systems, and workstations environments, including all computer peripherals.
- Triage computing issues with the ability to differentiate between networking, hardware, and applications levels accordingly.
- Collaborate with staff to define system software/hardware specifications.
- Monitor and analyze resource usage for system performance optimization.
- Configure and maintain system cyber security strategies, following SLAC and SSRL policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with beam line staff to fully comprehend computing workflow as it relates to beam line controls and data acquisition.
- Manage product life cycle management for computing systems.
- Document systems infrastructure for users, beam line support staff and SSRL IT group administrators.
- Maintain knowledge of new hardware, operating systems, software, best practices, current industry trends, and how it may apply to the existing infrastructure.
- Attend training to keep skills current.
- Use automation and scripting tools to manage existing and future systems.
- Function as a technical liaison for scientific division beamline computer system administration.
- Other duties may also be assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer information systems, computer engineering, or related field and 5 years of relevant experience in system administration.
- Experience with complex multi-system platforms and vendors.
- Understanding of networks, network equipment, network segmentation, and TCP/UDP protocols.
- Ability to take initiative independently while maintaining broad communications with team members.
- Advanced knowledge of security trends, best practices, and security protocols.
- Knowledge and understanding of remote access tools and applications
- Shell/command line capabilities via Windows and Linux distributions.
- Experience with LDAP and Active Directory
- Ability to identify and manage priorities.
