WHO ARE WE

The Texas Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Division administers 12 federal child and special nutrition and more than $2.5 billion in federal money annually used to fund the programs for the State of Texas.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

The Food & Nutrition Data Analyst will work in a fast paced, multi-faceted environment performing data analysis, reporting, and research work for the Program Advancement Team of the Texas Department of Agriculture's (TDA) Food and Nutrition (F&N) Division. Work involves defining datasets, conducting detailed analysis, completing routine/routine and moderately complex reporting, and providing results to support program operations, decision-making, and improvement activities. You will work under close/moderate supervision with minimal/limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Compile, manipulate and/or query data to create precise data sets, using judgement and subject matter expertise to translate user needs.

Interpret, analyze, and present data results using standard evaluation tools, methods, and techniques.

Synthesize and summarize quantitative and qualitative information for executive summaries, routine reports, and other reports.

Conduct quality assurance and assist with developing data quality practices. Recommend and implement necessary changes to ensure accurate data reporting.

Create, enhance, and maintain publicly posted program information, data, and/or maps for the division.

Assist with the development of data definition standards and data usage guidelines for the division.

Assist in the development of performance metrics and evaluation criteria as requested by management.

Provide technical assistance and training for data tools used within the division.

Follow all TDA policies and procedures.

Perform other duties as assigned.

In addition to the Primary Responsibilities listed above, the following are also applicable to the Data Analyst II:

Analyze and research data content, structure, and relationships to identify gaps, errors, anomalies, inconsistencies, and redundancies, collaborating with division staff as needed.

Consult with internal and external customers to identify and translate user needs and validate data requirements.

Develop tools for internal customers, such as Excel-based tools, maps, and dashboards, as assigned.



Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION DATA ANALYST I:

Bachelor's degree with major coursework in business analytics, data analytics, data science, mathematics, statistics, or economics.

Work experience in data analysis or analyzing information.

Work experience preparing reports.

Work experience with Microsoft Excel or data analytics software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and completion of a data analytics certification program or related may substitute for required work experience.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION DATA ANALYST II:

Bachelor's degree with major coursework in business analytics, data analytics, data science, mathematics, statistics, or economics.

Two (2) years' work experience in a data analytics role or related.

experience with Microsoft Excel and/or data analytics software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Work experience involving statistics.

Work experience in research.

Work experience with SQL.

A Bachelor's degree and completion of a data analytics certification program may substitute for one (1) year of required work experience.

A Master's degree with major coursework in business analytics, data analytics, data science, mathematics, statistics, or economics may substitute for required work experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of statistics and analyzing data sets; of running queries, report writing, and presenting findings; and of record keeping, including security procedures for handling, protecting, and distributing confidential data.

Skill in the use of a computer and applicable software; in conducting data searches; in evaluating and translating large amounts of data; in critical thinking; and in providing customer service excellence to both internal and external customers.

Ability to compile, review, and analyze data; to prepare reports; to maintain accuracy and attention to detail; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and to exercise sound judgement and discretion.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS

This position will work in a normal office work environment and may have exposure to dust and environmental allergens consistent with normal business activities and human contact. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve walking; standing; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; performing tasks requiring fine motor skills and coordination; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able to work extended periods at a computer and may require working extended hours and some evenings and weekends, as needed. May involve travel (up to 5%*), occasionally overnight.

TELEWORK & WORK HOURS

TDA has a telework policy that will allow eligible positions to telework up to two (2) days per week after completing six (6) months of employment with the agency. The employee must meet eligibility criteria set forth in the Telework Policy.
