WHAT YOU'LL DO

The International Trade Specialist will perform advanced marketing work for the Texas Department of Agriculture's (TDA) Trade & Business Development (TBD) division. You will be involved in coordinating international marketing and trade promotion activities, providing support and technical assistance to Texas businesses, and developing professional relationships to promote Texas agricultural products in international markets. You will work under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop professional relationships and provide support and technical assistance to Texas businesses, agriculture producers and other agency partners to promote international trade. Provide technical assistance, information and referrals related to the export of their products, and provide resources for services, including export finance and international business practices.

Recruit businesses to participate in trade promotion events, including overseas and domestic tradeshows, and inbound and outbound trade missions. Coordinate all functions related to those activities, including but not limited to, ensuring businesses are travel ready, communicating with trade events or other in country staff, coordination of schedules and travel details for members of the trade delegation and prepare needed reports at the conclusion of activities.

Conduct research and primary data gathering to implement strategies that promote participation recruitment and retention for federal and state programs administered by TDA and including the U.S. Livestock Genetics Export, Inc. (USLGE) and the Southern U.S. Trade Association (SUSTA), developing new market opportunities.

Serve as the liaison to industry stakeholders, including the private sector, trade and professional organizations, institutions of higher education, chambers of commerce, economic development agencies, and regional groups.

Analyze trade potential for new and existing international markets and build and expand the agency network to increase Texas agriculture exposure in priority markets.

Counsel Texas businesses, both new and expanding on exporting, including export country selection, documentation, logistics, payment methods and compliance.

Follow all TDA policies and procedures.

Perform other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

Bachelor's degree in business administration, international trade, or related field (one year of work experience related to the primary responsibilities may substitute for one year of college).

Two (2) years of experience in business development, international relations, export operations, or in a state, US federal or overseas trade promotion role.

Experience working for or with small businesses.

Work experience making presentations to groups.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge of marketing products, services, and associated equipment; of US and international policies and programs affecting trade, including exporting, exporting regulations and practices and trade policy; of the principles and dynamics of marketing and merchandising; of marketing or promotion of Texas products, services and communities; and of various division and TDA programs.

Skill in providing customer service excellence to both internal and external customers; in conducting presentations to individuals and groups; and in the use of a computer and applicable software.

Ability to develop marketing strategies; to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with agency staff and the general public, including diverse groups of people; and to exercise sound judgment and discretion.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS

This position will work in a normal office work environment and may have exposure to dust and environmental allergens consistent with normal business activities and human contact. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve walking; standing; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping and bending; performing tasks requiring fine motor skills and coordination; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Must be able work extended periods at a computer and may require working extended hours and some evenings and weekends, as needed. May involve travel (up to 15%*), occasionally overnight.

TELEWORK & WORK HOURS

TDA has a telework policy that will allow eligible positions to telework up to two (2) days per week after completing six (6) months of employment with the agency. The employee must meet eligibility criteria set forth in the Telework Policy.
