Insurance Specialist I (Insurance Specialist)

This position works out of the Barbara Jordan Building office and performs customer service answering incoming calls on the Consumer Helpline, through the navigation of the complaint portal in the internal network database (SIRCON). TDI works to educate and protect consumers. Work involves providing general information, guiding consumers to Texas Rules and statutes relating to their inquiries, compliance with the Texas Insurance Code, Texas Administrative Code, and adopted rules. Primary work involves fielding calls consumers, insurance companies, third- party licensing entities, internal agency inquiries, and the public, inquiring about their consumer protections and rights. Other duties as assigned include assisting consumers through the complaint process using resources on the TDI website, and explaining appeals, mediation, or arbitration processes. Works under close supervision with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

This position:

• Answer incoming calls on the Consumer Helpline.

• Direct consumers to agency website for forms such as complaints, appeals, mediation, arbitration, etc. and provide information with instructions and procedures for submitting forms to TDI.

• Provide guidance and education regarding consumer protections and rights as defined by the Texas Insurance Code and Texas Administrative Code.

• Coordinate with Complaint Resolution staff to help consumers with insurance complaints.

• Performs other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:

This position requires:

• 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university with major coursework in insurance or business administration.

• 6-month experience in technical insurance or in a field relative to assignment.

Education and experience relevant to position requirements may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis. Satisfy the requirements to maintain fully qualified driving status.

Additional job details:

This position requires regular work attendance. The position may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule. If eligible, the employee must have a secure, dedicated workspace with reliable broadband internet service. The ideal candidate must be available for weekly meetings and group collaboration via Microsoft Teams and other applications during regular business hours.

Preferences for this position include:

• Bilingual English and Spanish

This position requires demonstrated knowledge of:

• State laws, rules, procedures, and regulations relevant to job requirements.

• A personal computer and Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel.

• Agent Licensing procedures, policies, and processes.

• Insurance principles and practices.

• Laws and statutes regarding consumer protections, insurance policy requirements and prohibitions, underwriting principles, and licensing requirements.

This position requires demonstrated skill in:

• Problem solving and critical thinking.

• Using Microsoft Office software applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint.

• Using personal computers sufficient to enter and extract data from related systems and programs such as Centralized Accounting Payroll and Personnel (CAPPS) and other systems required to perform the job.

• Communicating and working effectively with all levels of employees and the public.

• Use of SharePoint, OneNote, Microsoft Office, and standard office equipment.

This position requires the demonstrated ability to:
