Pay Range: $25.94 - $31.25 hourly. This is a full-time, temporary position, expected to last 6-months. Employee will be paid bi-weekly.

This position is dependent on the availability of auxiliary revenues funding. Compensation will be commensurate upon experience and qualifications.

Because this appointment is temporary, you will not be eligible to receive all of the benefits normally provided to members of the university staff under the standard University of Colorado benefits programs. You are not eligible to receive paid vacation leave, medical, or retirement benefits. However, you are eligible to accrue sick leave.

You will accrue 0.034 hours of sick leave per hour worked. You must report all hours worked and sick leave taken to your supervisor in the MyLeave system and submit your MyLeave timesheet for approval monthly. All days, except for university holidays, must be worked or claimed as sick leave; this includes periods when regular faculty and students are not in session such as during academic breaks. You may not use more leave time than hours scheduled to work. Sick leave time accrued will display in the portal at the conclusion of each pay period.

Summary

The Employee Relations Principal Professional at UCCS is tasked with the expert administration of all employee relations matters. This pivotal role requires demonstrated expertise in employee relations to adeptly address, resolve, and mentor others on intricate workplace concerns while ensuring compliance with employment laws and university policies. Serving as an advisor and mentor, this position will provide invaluable guidance to campus partners through the intricacies of employee relations.

Essential Functions

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Complex Case Resolution
    • Lead the resolution of all employee relations issues, applying expert knowledge and analytical skills to handle sensitive cases involving misconduct, grievances, and disputes.
    • Provide final recommendations for complex cases to ensure fair and legally compliant outcomes.
  • Policy Application and Compliance:
    • Interpret and apply university policies and employment laws precisely, ensuring all employee relations actions comply with regulatory standards.
    • Update and advise on policy changes as needed in response to evolving legal and university requirements.
  • Mentorship and Training:
    • Mentor and support junior employee relations professionals, enhancing their skills and understanding of best practices in employee relations. May develop and deliver targeted training sessions to staff, focusing on conflict resolution, legal compliance, and effective communication.
  • Stakeholder Engagement and Advisory:
    • Serve as the key point of contact for employee relations within the university, advising senior leaders and HR colleagues on complex ER issues.
    • Facilitate effective communication and mediation between parties to resolve conflicts amicably.
  • Reporting and Documentation:
    • Maintain accurate records of all cases and interventions, ensuring documentation is precise, confidential, and compliant.
    • Analyze trends in employee relations issues and prepare reports for HR leadership to aid in strategic decision-making.


Tentative Search Timeline

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Labor Relations, Law, or a closely related field. (Substitution: Year-for-year experience in a related field will be considered)
  • Minimum of three (3) years of direct experience in employee relations, demonstrating thorough knowledge and application of employment laws and dispute resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and lead in a high-pressure environment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree or professional certification in Human Resources or related field.
  • Prior experience in higher education or similarly complex organizational settings.
  • Demonstrably extensive experience in mediating and resolving complex workplace issues.


Physical Requirements

The position primarily involves sedentary work within an office setting, including prolonged sitting and working at a computer. The role requires occasional mobility across campus for meetings and training sessions. The employee must be capable of operating standard office equipment and handling documents and materials up to 20 pounds. Visual and auditory acuity are essential to performing the responsibilities of this role effectively.
