The Division of Engineering Services (DES), Materials Engineering and Testing Services (METS) is looking to hire a Transportation Engineer Electrical (TEE) in the Office of Quality Assurance and Source Inspection (QASI).

Under the general direction of a Senior TEE Supervisor, the TEE, will perform source inspection and quality assurance testing on the electrical/electronic products used in the California Transportation System. The TEE will be headquartered in the METS Laboratory in Sacramento. Extensive travel may be necessary.

The TEE will perform Quality Assurance (QA) inspections and laboratory testing on material used on statewide construction projects. Duties include QA testing of electrical materials including but not limited to traffic signal control equipment, closed circuit television equipment, Light Emitting Diode (LED) roadway safety lighting, changeable message signs, LED traffic signal modules, service equipment enclosures and fiber optic equipment. Testing will be performed in a laboratory environment or at the source of manufacturer. The incumbent will be required to frequently interact with Resident Engineers, manufacturers, and contractors. The incumbent will analyze Caltrans project plans and special provisions; identify electrical material requiring inspection; ensure appropriate contractor and Department-furnished electrical material has been specified; ensure electrical material has been manufactured in accordance with current Caltrans' construction practices. Incumbent should have knowledge of electrical and electronic technology with the ability to utilize such knowledge as outlined in typical duties. Knowledge of common electrical instrumentation and equipment used in testing of materials associated with traffic control, traffic management and highway lighting systems (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, power analyzers, multi-meters etc.) is required. Ability to use a computer and work with databases. Ability to work independently and in a team environment. Familiarity and knowledge of Caltrans Standard Plans and Specifications and the Transportation Electrical Equipment Specifications. Knowledge of quality control (QC) and QA methodology. Must be able to analyze specific problems and develop an effective course of action, while maintaining independent work conditions.

Working Conditions
Position located in Sacramento, Sacramento County.

While at their base of operation, the employee will work in a climate-controlled office and laboratory under artificial lighting. Employee will be required to work with electrical/electronic equipment and components at a workbench or on a vehicle. Employee will be required to travel and work outdoors; may be exposed to dust, noise, uneven surfaces, weather extremes, hazardous heights, and confined spaces. Employee will be required to use appropriate safety equipment and components at a workbench or on a vehicle. Employee will also be required to use appropriate safety gear such as safety harnesses and respirators. As a statewide organization, DES adjusts to periods of fluctuating workload to successfully deliver projects. DES employees may be given temporary assignments on DES projects throughout the State as workload demands.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
