Duties/Responsibilities

Duties/Responsibilities

Field Research to include manual labor equipment operations and data collection. Coordinate field research activities with Field Research Services and Branch Station personnel; also for conducting research to determine critical bud temperatures for peaches; collaborating with Project Leader to translate extension publications to Spanish.

Position Summary

Peach is one of the most important crops in the state of Georgia. The Peach Research and Extension Program is currently located in the Griffin Campus. The University of Georgia Griffin campus was first established as the Georgia Experiment Station in 1888 as a center for innovation in agricultural research. The University of Georgia - Griffin Campus Faculty and staff perform research and extension in several crops. Griffin campus is located approximately 40 miles south of Atlanta, GA and 64 miles north-west of Byron, GA. This is about 40-50 miles north of the major peach producing areas in Georgia, which makes this campus a prime location for Peach Research and Extension for Georgia and the southeastern US. The visiting research professional I will be working at UGA - Griffin Campus. This position will help the Peach Research and Extension Program with research activities to increase profitability and new management practices for the peach industry in Georgia and the Southeastearn US. The work done by this position will include working in research projects funded by the Georgia Agricultural Commodity Commission for Peaches. Other activities will include translation to Spanish of extension related publications, peach blog establishment and modification, laboratory analyses of fruit quality based on brix and acidity, and greenhouse maintenance of plants.

Physical Demands

Able to bend and lift at least 50 pounds, use Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Able to work in a laboratory for multiple hours a day. Duties also require intermittent out-of-town travel to research plots during the weekday.
