The Design Division is looking for interns who are currently enrolled in engineering, survey, landscape architecture, and related disciplines to join our team as an intern.

Our work includes a variety of disciplines that work at the state-wide level on areas such as landscape architecture, ADA/pedestrian elements, photogrammetry, 3D roadway design, roundabouts and innovative intersections, roadway design, traffic operational modeling, and hydrology/hydraulics. We collect/analyze data, design/provide design support services, perform project oversight reviews, and collaborate with workgroups in a variety of disciplines and across the State.

Full-time employment may be available when school is not in session, based on business needs.

Position Description

Must be enrolled in an engineering or related science degree program in an accredited college or university accepted by TX PELS. Assists in transportation engineering support work such as construction or maintenance inspection, structural construction or maintenance, laboratory work, landscaping, surveying or engineering data collection, operating data collection equipment, and other entry-level engineering support work. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Developing spreadsheets, databases, and other electronic documents in support of engineering design for transportation projects.
  • Assisting with 2D/3D design/drafting activities, including preparing and updating drawings for highway projects, 3D model reviews to verify geometric elements meet criteria, etc.
  • Assisting with hydrology & hydraulics engineering design & plan review for highway projects.
  • Assisting in reviews of engineering submittals, including preliminary bridge layouts, schematics, final design / construction drawings, and other associated engineering details and documents.
  • Assisting in the development of roadway geometric design and project development guidance and related tools.
  • Assisting with update of design manuals, engineering standards, specifications, etc
  • Assisting in traffic and safety analysis for highway and intersection projects
  • Assisting in surveying, remote sensing and photogrammetry projects
  • Assisting in landscape engineering & architectural design & plan review for highway projects
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School / Entry Summer in recommended high school plan

Other Conditions:

  • Must be enrolled in an engineering or related science degree program in an accredited college or university accepted by TX PELS.
  • Must be at least 16 years of age, a student currently enrolled in high school or any institution of higher education to include

    a trade/vocational school.
  • Employees at least 18 years of age with valid driver's license may be assigned driving duties and may

    use power tools.


Experience: Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools.
  • Finger-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with finger rather than whole hand.
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers

    Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading.
