A bachelor's degree and five years of professional level investment experience with an investment management organization, pension consultant or plan sponsor.
Three years of experience must include institutional private equity and / or private debt experience consisting of:
Conducting market research, building industry relationships and sourcing primary fund private market investments.
Analyzing, evaluating, recommending and monitoring primary fund, private market investments.
Experience supervising and mentoring staff.
Preferred Qualifications
Robust knowledge and understanding of the private markets industry.
Portfolio management experience, either implementing a quantitative process, or assisting the lead portfolio manager.
Demonstrated ability to leverage network of contacts for sourcing and diligence investment opportunities.
Experience serving on Limited Partner Advisory Boards.
Experience making presentations and or investment recommendations to Boards or Investment Committees.

Duties Description Working under the supervision of the Private Equity Department Director(s) of Private Equity, the Assistant Director will perform with a high degree of independence to provide investment expertise in sourcing and screening investment opportunities, monitoring active fund investments, direct the day-to-day supervision of junior staff and Mid-Office operations and complete various administrative task and other ad-hoc projects as needed.
The duties of the Assistant Director of Private Equity include, but will not be limited to, the following:
Lead the underwriting of private equity and private debt partnerships through a quantitative and qualitative review including but not limited to a detailed analysis of the investment track record, reference checks with investors and portfolio company management, onsite visits, and legal due diligence.
Preparation and presentation of investment memorandums and recommendations for private equity and private debt investment opportunities at investment committees.
Ensure that quarterly monitoring for the private equity and private debt portfolios is completed in a timely manner and assist with this preparation as necessary.
Review and confirm the accuracy of capital drawdowns, cash, or stock distributed to the System.
Utilize the Department's CRM software to track interactions with general partners, limited partners, and advisors within the private equity and private debt portfolios.
Utilize software to monitor the portfolio to generate performance reports and other ad hoc reports as requested.
Responsible for coordinating and providing information or data requests for third parties including internal or external audits, internal departments at NYSTRS, or the System's private equity and private debt consultant(s).
Lead the preparation of quarterly board reports for the private equity and private debt portfolios.
Represent NYSTRS on limited partnership advisory committees, investor meetings, and industry conferences.
Review amendments and other legal matters with respect to the private equity and private debt portfolios.
Develop and maintain a network of contacts in the investment community to facilitate reference calls and due diligence.
Coordinate with the Directors of Private Equity in the supervision of junior staff in the execution of investment underwriting, portfolio monitoring, portfolio analysis, projects, and portfolio management.
Assist in the development of the NYSTRS strategic review and pacing models for the private equity and private debt portfolios.
Ensure compliance with the private equity and private debt investment policy manual.
Recommend strategies for the continuous improvement or refinement of procedures, templates, and practices.
Completion of other projects or assignments as deemed necessary.
