Job Description

PURPOSE OF THIS POSTION

under the direction of the Head Nurse/Assistant Director/Director of Nursing is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and evaluating the quality of care rendered to Behavioral Health Adult patients. As the AHN s/he has the authority and responsibility of managing the unit to ensure quality care for every patient in the unit and is held accountable by the use of the nursing process. S/he is responsible for the implementation of the Nursing Department philosophy and objectives of Nursing Care through the use of the Departmental and Nursing Policies and procedures. Serves as a team leader and assists Head Nurse in guiding and directing nursing personnel.
1. Adheres to established infection control protocol.
2. Adheres to established policies related to patient abuse, patient's rights, cultural spiritual beliefs, and confidentiality.
3. Adheres to established policy and procedure and maintains compliance.
4. Checks for completed assignments. Takes necessary corrective action and accepts responsibility and accountability for actions taken.
5. Conducts risk assessments to reduce adverse events.
6. Effectively utilizes the electronic as well as the paper medical record.
7. Ensures a safe and secure environment free of hazards to reduce the risk of injury to all customers. (Patients, visitors, and staff.) 8. Ensures that safety management issues are appropriately addressed.
9. Explains, involves, and instructs patients/families concerning the therapeutic regimen and environment of care.
10. In the absence of a Head Nurse assumes charge of the unit.
11. In the absence of a Head Nurse will attend and participate in committee meetings as scheduled and follow through.
12. Keeps anecdotal records of significant occurrences on the unit and behavior and performance of staff 13. Maintains safe work habits and assumes responsibility in patient safety.
14. Participates in defining, interpreting, implementing and maintaining standards of nursing practice.
15. Recognizes emergency situations and functions effectively according to emergency protocols.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Evidence of graduation from an accredited National League School of Nursing.
2. Licensed and currently a staff nurse registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State.
3. BLS (Basic Life Support) certified, as required by the position.
4. Demonstrates satisfactory completion of general, service, and age specific competency.
5. Demonstrates commitment to continued professional development.
6. Ability to teach patients as well as staff personnel.
7. Effective communication skills: (a) written and (b) verbal.
8. Collaboration with all medical/nursing and other health care providers.
9. Possess leadership skills (problem solving, relationship management, collaborative practice, staff development, priority setting, etc.)
