Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Assistant Head Nurse- assigned to the Neonatal Intensive Care/continuing care nursery Unit.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Neonatal Intensive Care

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Relieve Head Nurse and perform Head Nurse functional job description.
2. Otherwise: responsible for CCII, Admission Nursery and Well Baby Nursery.
3. Assign staff in the above areas, assign meal breaks and relief.
4. Do patient classification sheets for above areas.
5. Make daily rounds with neonatologist for above areas.
6. Assist in orientation of new employees.
7. Ensure that equipment is functioning properly and clean.
8. Insure that supplies are adequate.
9. Provide direct patient care when needed.
10. Educate and counsel mothers about infant care.
11. Ensure that infant for rooming in are transported safely to mothers.
12. Identify potential problems and take appropriate action.
13. Maintain area in clean and tidy fashion.
14. Assist with Quality Assurance audits.
15. Keep head nurse informed of unit activity.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. Six (6) months of experience as a registered nurse.
