--Overview:

We are seeking an Associate Project Management Specialist to support the project efforts on either large-scale scientific research and development projects or large scientific instrument projects.This position resides in the Project Management Division within the Office of Laboratory Directorate - Operations at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Support principle investigators or project directors in facilitating and coordinating project activities, project reporting, sponsor communication and field work coordination.
  • Work with project staff to develop and maintain schedules, cost estimates, assist with risk identification, and change control.
  • Provide day-to-day support to the project with schedule and cost maintenance and status, and forecasting and assist in generating monthly reports on project status and performance.
  • Perform ad-hoc activities as directed by the project manager, principle investigator or project director.
  • Support the project management staff in preparing for various project reviews, including internal and external project status reviews.

Basic Qualifications:
  • A BS in project management, business, engineering, science, or a related field of study is required for consideration.
  • Two years of applicable experience.
  • Have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and be capable of working independently on complex tasks in support of team members.
  • Possess advanced competence in Microsoft applications.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completed project management training and/or certification.
  • Some hands-on experience with: Oracle Primavera, Deltek Cobra or similar cost processors, risk analysis and simulation software, change control applications, and custom system and report development.
  • Previous experience with similar projects.
  • Very strong communications skills, with the ability to successfully interact with DOE, project reviewers, senior laboratory management and senior project staff members.
  • Possess a solid understanding of project management best practices and competence creating project schedules, performing resource loading, incorporating monthly status, and creating and maintaining the project baseline.
  • Demonstrated ability of successful work in an interdisciplinary project environment and/or scientific collaboration that includes participants from academia, national laboratories, and other scientific organizations.
  • Exceptional communications skills with the ability to convey technical concepts to a diverse audience.
  • Experience working with senior level customers.
  • Experience working on large and/or complex projects.
