Duties

  • Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.
  • Provides biomedical equipment support, clinical engineering services and manager expertise to promote the safe, reliable, effective, and economical use of resources in the delivery of health care.
  • Analyzes, designs, modifies, evaluates and corrects system malfunctions on complex patient care systems with interrelated and sometimes dispersed subsystems.
  • Provides advice and consultation to others in purchase of electro medical instrumentation and provides guidance on safety techniques in relation to electrical and electronic systems.
  • Assists with training of equipment users, writing instructional materials in techniques and methods of testing, calibrating and operating patient care systems for appropriate personnel.
  • Generates reports of program activities to provide to stakeholders or for inclusion in accreditation review, resource requirements determinations, program funding methodologies and other needs.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

To qualify for the grade GS-05:

A. Experience: Have completion of at least three (3) years of progressively responsible experience, one (1) year of which was comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors), that demonstrates the ability to: 1) Analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions; 2) Plan and organize work; and 3) Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

B. Education: Have successful completion of a four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in any field.

OR

C. Combination of experience and education: Have a qualifying combination of the experience described in response A and the education described in response B. To determine if you qualify under this combination first divide your total months of qualifying experience by 36 (this is the equivalent of 3 years experience). Then divide your completed semester hours of education by 120 (120 semester hours equals 4 years of post-high school education). Finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.

To qualify for the grade GS-07:

A. Experience: Have one (1) year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors). Examples of specialized experience include assisting with selecting, installing, modifying, testing and evaluating medical or dental equipment; repairing, calibrating and performing preventive maintenance of electrical/electronic medical or dental equipment; providing assistance in developing work requirements for patient-care systems, devices or assemblies.

OR

B. Education: Have one (1) full year of graduate level education with major study in biomedical equipment technology, medicine, electronics, engineering technology, or other related field.

OR

C. Combination of experience and education: Have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described in A and B above which, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. To calculate your combined amount, first determine the amount of your specialized experience as a percentage of the requirement listed in A above. Then determine the amount of your graduate education as a percentage of the requirement listed in B above; then add the two percentages. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. This education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

OR

D. Superior Academic Achievement: Have completed all the requirements for a bachelor's degree with major study in biomedical equipment technology, medicine, electronics, engineering technology, or other related field AND meet one of the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) based on the following: (1) class standing (upper third standing in graduating class based on completed courses); (2) grade-point average (3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 as recorded on the official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum); or (3) election to membership in a national scholastic honor society.

To qualify for the grade GS-09:

A. Experience: Have one (1) full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors). Examples of specialized experience include assisting with the evaluation, installation, service, and repair of complex medical equipment and systems; working with professional, engineering or medical personnel in the purchase of medical or dental equipment; inspecting and testing medical equipment to determine whether it meets government specifications; providing advice to clinical staff regarding new equipment, environment, available facilities, network requirements, and overall life cycle management.

OR

B. Education: Have aMaster's or equivalent graduate degree with major study in biomedical equipment technology, medicine, electronics, engineering technology, or other related field or have completed at least two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree.

OR

C. Combination of experience and education: Have an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education as described above in A and B which, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. To calculate, first take the number of semester hours or equivalent earned towards a graduate degree (in excess of 18 semester hours) and divide by 18 semester hours or equivalent. Then take the number of months of experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. Please note only graduate education in excess of one year (18 semester hours) may be used to qualify under this option. This education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Time In Grade
