The Office of Special Education will provide supports to districts, parents and SWDs to ensure outcomes of a free appropriate public education for students protected under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). We will review data to make decisions that will impact support for SWDs to meet college and career ready standards through equitable access to rigorous courses, high-quality instruction, and appropriate supports.

This position exists to support professional development across the state of New Mexico on special education topics and requirements of the IDEA to school employees, instructional support providers, relative service providers, public school officials, governing boards, administrators, super intendants, and teachers to increase performance, student outcomes, and transitional services for students with disabilities across the state of New Mexico.

How does it get done?

Coordinate and provide professional development to school employees, instructional support providers, related service providers, public school officials, governing board, administrators, superintendents, and teachers across the state of New Mexico on varying special education topics and requirements of the IDEA.
Collect statewide data on specific indicator determinations, student performance, assessments, program evaluations, compliance and accountability monitoring to provide specific professional development training.
Submit an annual report on the status of special education of New Mexico students with disabilities, nationwide trends, and best practices with students with disabilities.
Develop, review, and propose updates to the special education statutes, rules, and policies.
Collaborate with the department staff to annually update the state plan for students with disabilities.
Solicit input through surveys and/or interviews regarding the delivery of professional development.
Take any other actions as directed by the Director of the Office of Special Education.

Ideal Candidate

The Office of Special Education seeks to employ an individual with superb communication skills for the position of Educator Administrator (EA) - Program and Support Specialist (Professional Development) to provide timely and relevant customer service, technical assistance, professional development, coaching, and monitoring to LEA's, Charter Schools, Pueblos, Tribes and Nations with specific indicator alignment of program and requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Part B (IDEA-B); these duties are referred to as General Supervision and are cited in IDEA-B under 34 Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) 300.600. Specifically, the Program and Support Specialist will provide instructional leadership specific and meaningful feedback, informational resources, and recommendations on the implementation of evidence and research-based programs and services that are culturally and linguistically responsive.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Administration or Business Administration and five (5) years of experience as a teacher and/or program administrator. Substitutions apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico's Driver's License.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel is required for meetings and conferences.
