GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

This position requires a diverse set of experiences in clinical and translational research, staff training/supervision, budget management, project budget oversight, and an overall ability to manage multiple, complex multi-site intervention studies throughout all stages of progression (conception/grant writing, set-up, conduct, results dissemination, post-award management). Research skills required include: basic knowledge of clinical trial design and conduct; IRB protocol development and management; some knowledge of outcomes assessments relevant to mind-body research targeting aging and neuro-motor impaired populations (e.g. pain; cognitive function; gait and balance assessments; general functional fitness tests; quality of life); basic quantitative/statistical skills; REDCap database creation and management, and some experience with qualitative research (interviewing and data analysis).

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

  1. Assist PI and study team in management of multiple ongoing and new clinical trials including studies evaluating tai chi and chiropractic for chronic neck pain, chiropractic care for episodic migraine, Mindful Steps program for COPD and Heart Failure, tai chi for acute coronary syndrome based at BIDMC, yoga for post-surgical pain, app-guided meditation for sleep, a group integrative health medical visits for chronic pain.
  2. Work with the research director and study PIs to help finalize protocols and develop study manuals and CRPs for new clinical studies.
  3. Works with the PI and statisticians to develop data collection process and data management/data check procedures, including the development REDCap databases.
  4. Work with the study PIs to develop and write IRB protocols, amendments, and annual reviews, and oversee ongoing communication with multiple HMS affiliated IRBs, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
  5. Work with the study PIs and site IRBs to develop and create reliance agreements and sIRBs for multi-site studies, including development of procedures for management, oversight, and synchronization of study activities at all sites.
  6. Hires, trains and supervises Research Assistants for multiple studies.
  7. Supports post-doctoral researchers conducting clinical research trials at MGB.
  8. Responsible for the day-to-day activities of the studies.
  9. Work with research administration and PIs on overseeing study budgets.
  10. Responsible for setting up and maintaining vendor agreements with tai chi instructors, chiropractors, and other consultants for all studies.
  11. May actively participate in studies including participant enrollment, obtaining informed consent, collection of biomotion and physiological data administering questionnaires, performing structured qualitative interviews of research participants or other outcomes assessments.
  12. Directly responds to inquiries regarding overall research program, as well as individual study protocols and policies.
  13. Plans agendas and provides logistical support for meetings for overall research program and specific study teams, including recording, disseminating and archiving minutes.
  14. Collaborates on manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, including co-authorship of papers. For specific pilot studies, potential to serve as formal co-investigator and lead author for original research.
  15. Participates in decisions made for the study and formulation of study-specific policies and procedures. Identifies modifications needed and works to implement solutions.
  16. Participates in larger administrative and leadership meetings for Osher Center.
  17. Performs all other duties, as assigned.


WORKING CONDITIONS: Primarily working at computer in office conditions. Occasional walking, lifting and fine motor skills.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY: Work with research administration to make sure studies remain within budget.

Sedentary Work: Lifting 10 lbs. maximum and occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as dockets, ledgers and small tools.

  1. Works within legal, regulatory, accreditation and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by BWH/Partners.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Bachelor's degree. Masters degree preferred.

2. Minimum of 5 years prior experience working in a research setting.

3. Strong knowledge of word-processing and operating computer software programs, such as Microsoft Word and Excel; Experience with REDCAP; Experience with MGB IRB

4. Knowledge of medical terminology.

5. Experience supervising research assistants and technicians.
