Job Description and Duties

District 08- 603/2376 Maintenance Support

Under the Caltrans Maintenance Area Superintendent, the Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, acts as a lead conducting field inspections of the district's culvert/drainage systems. Responsibilities also include assessing the physical condition of culverts, recommending maintenance strategies, assisting in data processing, quality control and equipment maintenance. Possession of a Class "C" Driver License is required.

The incumbent conducts and directs culvert field and drainage inspections throughout the district. The incumbent must have practical field experience in highway maintenance techniques. Develops work plans, crew schedules and must be able to identify culvert maintenance strategies to include types of culvert defects that lead to structure failure. Collects inventory and assessment data using hand-held computers, Global Positioning System (GPS) survey equipment and remote video equipment; is responsible for the quality and integrity of field data; and based on training and field experience to assess the condition of culverts, recommend appropriate repair strategies. All Inspections will be done as required and in compliance with the Federal Clean Water Act, the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit, the Storm Water Management Plan (SWMP) and the Caltrans Storm Water Quality Handbook - Maintenance Staff Guide. Strictly adheres to Safety Policies and Procedures contained in Chapter 8 of the Maintenance Manual Volume 1 and complies with responsibilities set forth in in the Caltrans Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Identifies the condition of the culverts on the State highway system with regard to any failure of the roadbed itself that might damage adjacent property, property downstream or endanger life.
