Job Description

Purpose:

Under the direction of manager/supervisor, work as clinical laboratory technologist in core laboratory (Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology and specimen processing) and responsible for but not limited to; bench work, rotating weekends, inventory management And or other assigned duties required for smooth laboratory operations, patient safety and optimal patient care. Collaborates with
other sections of laboratory or departments within institution, to provide highest quality of care.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The [Clinical Laboratory Technologist] is charged with and responsible for:
1. Following laboratory's pre-analytic and analytic procedures and maintaining records of tests.
2. Maintaining records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
3. Adhering to the laboratory's quality assurance procedures, including documenting all quality control activities, instrument and equipment verifications, maintenance and preventive maintenance.
4. Following the laboratory's policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established performance specifications,
5. Identify and documenting problems that may adversely affect test performance, and notifying supervisor, assistant director(s) or director and documenting all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
6. Ensuring test system performance by initiating preventive and/or remedial actions and that test results are not reported until corrective action has been taken and the test is performing according to laboratory established performance specifications.
7. Follows standard precautions, laboratory safety/infection control protocols, use appropriate PPE, decontaminate bench surfaces or equipment and does documentation as appropriate.
8. Receives/handles/label specimens, ensures integrity, transcribes requisitions/orders if required, prints labels, separate and prioritize specimens for analyses, distribution to other section, reference laboratory, send out, preservation and storage.
9. Review of applicable test results daily for accuracy and reliability, accurately document in Laboratory Information System, communicate and properly document critical laboratory values to providers and escalate when not able to do so.
10. Ensure data integrity (generating, transforming, maintaining and assuring accuracy, completeness and consistency of data for a specimen inclusive all information collected, and data generated, to produce a test result).
11. Engaged in Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement programs, keeps self-abreast with knowledge and developments in laboratory technology and maintains an annual minimum of 12 hours of continuing education.
12. Complies with patient confidentiality, safety, privacy and HIPAA rule, maintains environment of care standards, work on laboratory goals to prioritize safety/care of patients and respond to inquiries courteously, accurately and in a timely manner and
provide only necessary information admissible under the rules to the providers. Be knowledgeable about contents of policies and procedures relevant to scope of laboratory testing and that all patient identified information received or generated in laboratory, are health related confidential information and subject to confidentiality, HIPAA and PHI rules and regulations.
13. Promote safe, cooperative and professional health care environment for patient/public health safety, optimal patient care, best laboratory practices, rules/regulations and demonstrates standards of performance and behaviors consistent with timely clock in and clock out, scheduled breaks, cell PHONE usage, dress code and rules of conduct, Customer Service a priority, treating customers
(patients, visitors, and co-workers) in a professional manner exercising courtesy and tact.
14. Monitors supplies, inventory and equipment for adequacy, accuracy and reliability, ensuring testing materials storage/stability, troubleshoots problems and calls service or vendor technical support when needed. Monitors, checks and document environmental conditions, physically inspect reagents, controls, calibrators and or other supplies, checks lot number and expiration dates of materials used and does required documentation. Ensures Shift to shift communication to the staff and supervisors about pending tasks, ongoing compliance and tasks that needs to be accomplished in a timely manner to avoid safety and patient care issues for efficient laboratory operations. Assist in staff training/shadowing, actively participate in performance improvement process of department/institution. Work on pending lists, communicate pending and other tasks to fellow workers and supervisor or laboratory management as required to accomplish tasks within due course of time for optimal patient care, safety and efficient laboratory operations. Perform other tasks as needed and be able to work on holidays
and rotate weekends.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist issued by the NYSED; and
2. One year of full-time paid experience as a technologist performing pertinent tests and analyses in a clinical laboratory as defined in Title V, Section 57 1 of the New York State Public Health Law.
