Duties & Responsibilities

Purpose of Position:
- Responsible for performing and assessing highly technical and complex clinical laboratory tests on specimens for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in a timely fashion. Assist with Supervisory duties on Night shifts and performs a wide variety of complex testing for Blood Bank. Organizes patient transfusion, test results and inventories of blood products and laboratory supplies to provide optimum service according to Blood bank management policies and protocols. Works independently under general direction to address laboratory needs as the occasion arises.

Job Responsibilities:
- Supervises the shift technical staff on Night Shift and provides support to the Supervisor V, Administrator and lab section COQ holder.
- Trains new employees; oversees the technical performance of new employees during orientation and less qualified personnel assigned to the same area.
- Monitors laboratory productivity; including supervisory review of abnormal and critical results, following up on incompletes, and monitoring turn-around-time.
- Prepares and set-up equipment, testing compounds and work areas.
- Identifies and prepares accurately specimens which have been collected by phlebotomy teams, Nurses or physicians in accordance with laboratory procedures and policies.
- Checks samples to ensure correct identification and that it matches with accompanying label to ensure accuracy of recording and reporting of results.
- Ensures all scheduled and stat tests are completed in a timely fashion.
- Ensures that labels on tubes correspond with labels on patient blood records and that tubes are signed by person drawing blood.
- Verifies the completeness and accuracy of results.
- Performs all other duties as assigned by Supervisor and/or designee.

Minimum Qualifications

One (1) year of full-time paid experience as a technologist performing pertinent tests and analyses in a clinical laboratory as defined in Title V, Section 571 of the New York State Public Health Law.

In addition to being licensed as a clinical laboratory technologist by the NYSED, candidates must also meet one of the qualification requirements of a laboratory supervisor as outlined in Title 10, Section 58-1.4 of the New York Public Health Law.
