Job Description
Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist limited or provisional permit issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED).

Job Description
- Prepares and sets up equipment, reagents and workstation. Prepares samples to be tested according to blood bank procedures. Performs manual and automated tests as needed.
- Analyzes, interprets, and reports test results.
- Performs ABO group, Rh typing and antibody screening on all patient samples. In addition, performs ABO group, Rh typing, and direct anti-human globulin tests on all cord samples.
- Performs transfusion reaction work-up on all patients that experience adverse reactions to transfusion; notifies Supervisor or Director
- Performs compatibility testing to minimize harm to patients. Utilizes blood carefully in order to minimize discarding. Performs routine and full crossmatching, selects appropriate blood for transfusion, releases emergency crossmatches, and processes Rh Immune Globulin requests.
- Accessions all blood and components as soon as possible after received.
- Compares and identifies documents from both patient and units properly before issuing blood and components for transfusion purposes. Perform the Utilization review of the Physician Order along with the checking of the patient diagnosis. Checks expiration date of blood and blood components before issuing.
- Investigates test results that fall outside established normal limits (i.e. -abnormal test results, identification of antibodies, fetal cell screening, eluate, and warm cross match).
- Prepares components for issuance to patients.
- Performs assigned quality control on reagents according to standard operating procedures. Performs quality control of equipment to ensure accurate results in Blood Bank testing.
- Participates in proficiency testing
- Assists with the training of new employees and trainees.
- Participates in in-services and continuing education courses
