General Information:

The Office of Admissions is seeking an Assistant Director for Middle School Programs. The Middle School program coordinates visits to JMU and exposure to higher education for students from schools throughout the state of Virginia and beyond. The Assistant Director is responsible for execution of a robust program that supports over 2000 middle school students each year, including school year and summer programs.
As part of the Access and Outreach team within Admissions, the Assistant Director also supports all group visit programs, including high school and special population programming. The Assistant Director provides analysis, support and vision to help shape the strategic planning process of Access and Outreach within Admissions.

Duties and Responsibilities:

*Coordinate and Execute Middle School Visits
Responsible for coordinating campus visits with interested middle schools, including following all Virginia Board of Education requirements, coordinating with campus resources and executing all programming.

*Assist with the Middle School Summer Program
Assist in executing multiple summer programs for Virginia middle school students, both on and off campus. Act as liaison for partner schools, conduct parent and staff meetings, and coordinate assessment efforts.

*Assist with Special Population and Group Visits
Work with the Visitation staff to coordinate all other special population and group visits, including presenting information sessions, serving as onsite liaison with groups, coordinating student interactions, and assisting with the group visit registration process.

*Serve in a support role within the Visitation Team of Admissions
Support the Visitation Team through presenting information sessions, answering phones, assisting with walk-in guests, as well as supporting major events and daily visitation processes.

*Create and Execute Program Evaluation and Assessment for Special Population and Group Visit programming
Evaluate and assess all programming in the middle school and group visit populations to assist with strategic planning for all group visit processes.

Qualifications:

Required:
  • Experience working with youth
  • Experience working directly with underrepresented communities
  • Proven effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and build relationships with different stakeholders both internally and externally
  • Ability to work as a team member in a high-energy environment
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently
  • Proven skills of flexibility and adaptability to change
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends and travel as appropriate
Additional Considerations:
  • Significant experience working with youth
  • Knowledge of the JMU Community, College Admissions, and/or Higher Education
  • Familiarity using and/or writing grant proposals
  • Working knowledge of child development as it relates to the target audience (11-14 year old students)
