Primary Responsibilities

HDR is seeking a qualified, experienced cultural specialist to support field projects and desktop reviews for projects throughout California, with the possibility of occasionally assisting other HDR offices throughout the United States. The primary responsibilities in this role include: preliminary fieldwork preparation, records searches, and Native American tribal contact; conducting, supervising, and managing field projects for archaeological monitoring, surveys, test excavations, data recovery excavations, and laboratory processing and analysis of artifacts; and archival/background research and report preparation. Candidate may assist with California and National Register eligibility evaluations, proposal preparation and other document preparation as needed, and manage small projects. Candidate works under the direct supervision of the Cultural Resources Group Manager and Cultural Resources Specialist Project Managers.

In the role of Cultural Resource Specialist I, we'll count on you to:

  • Perform site testing and conduct analyses work on a variety of development projects involving archaeological resources, historic structures, tribal resources and excavations
  • Provide technical expertise to develop design options or recommendations, and assist in the preparation of service deliverable documents
  • Perform routine scientist assignments requiring application of standard techniques and procedures
  • Complete projects with clear, specified objectives and limited variables
  • Work independently on small projects, or assist more-senior scientists on larger projects
  • Give direction to clerical and technical personnel as needed
  • Perform other duties as needed


Preferred Qualifications

  • MA/MS degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Architectural History or closely related field
  • Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) certification;
  • Experience/capabilities with GIS and digital data collection;
  • Technical specialty (i.e., lithic analysis, bioarchaeology, etc.).
  • Previous work experience in cultural resource projects


Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Architectural History or closely related field
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Self-starter with excellent writing and communication skills
  • Willingness to work under varied weather conditions
  • Successful candidates must be familiar with field study design and documentation, regulatory framework for cultural resource management, and GIS utilities
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
