Job Description

Responsibilities:
• In the absence of the DON, assumes direct responsibility for the twenty-four (24) hour operation and function of the nursing department
• Upholds Health + Hospital's professional conduct, mission, vision, ICARE values, and Just Culture principles
• Manages oversight of nursing service operations and patient care experience within Carter's LTACH
• The Deputy Director of Nursing is a key leadership team member who collaborates with the DON to provide leadership and direction in developing, standardizing, and sustaining clinical service delivery areas and programs, as well as driving the strategic plan for the controlled clinical growth and expansion of Carter's LTACH
• In collaboration with DON, manages the planning, development, and promulgation of programs, policies, and procedures for nursing services within the LTACH and ensures compliance with NYC Health + Hospital policies and procedures and accreditation standards
• Provide support and guidance with facilities regulatory requirements and surveys, implement new regulations as needed, and oversee the facilities' compliance with CMS, DOH, and Joint Commission
• Updates and maintains required nursing manuals, policies and procedures as applicable
• Collaborating with DON, manages and monitors business unit budgets and resource utilization to maximize efficiency within budgetary allowances
• Plans to appraise nursing care by making rounds and regularly reviewing patients' charts and care to identify appropriate countermeasures and corrective actions
• Monitors, analyzes, and evaluates utilization and quality of LTACH services and identifies and implements improvement plans with site leadership
• Works collaboratively with all interdisciplinary team members to ensure overall coordination of patient flow and services delivered to Carter's LTACH
• Assumes responsibility for implementing and evaluating systems and processes to maintain staff/patient ratios for nursing care in accordance with NYS Clinical Staffing Plan
• Assist in interviewing nursing title employees, utilize appropriate job-related criteria to select the most qualified employees
• Uses formal and informal recognition strategies for individual and team performance
• Provide safety by investigating Occurrence Reports on all nursing personnel, patients, and visitors
• Participates in identified labor relations concerns
• Seamless collaboration with Nursing Educators, including overseeing orientation and education programs to ensure alignment with Health + Hospitals policies & procedures, identifying new opportunities for the educational growth of the workforce, mandatory and regulatory education requirements are met, serving as a professional educational resource, and provides structures coaching activities
• Organizes, plans, and prioritizes varied responsibilities as it applies to own work as well as staff
• Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and calm within the facility. Acts as a role model for making appropriate and safe choices
• Maintains productive working relationships with medical professionals within Carter, other healthcare organizations, within the community, labor, and professional groups.
• Represents Carter and collaborates with OPCC on all identified system initiatives
• Completes all required employee training
• Continuously seeks knowledge to stay up to date with current trends and evidence-based practice
• Performs other related duties as assigned by the DON

Job Description

The Deputy Director of Nursing provides operational and clinical support to the Director of Nursing at NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter. Carter's Long-term Acute Care Hospital (LTACH) is a 126-bed facility with highly complex patients. The Deputy Director of Nursing collaborates with the DON in developing, implementing, and managing action plans to address patient care issues. The Deputy Director of Nursing must be a skilled leader able to demonstrate cultural competence in a diverse environment.

Minimum Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:
1. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3) below:
2. Master's Degree in nursing administration, education or an equivalent field and a minimum of six years of satisfactory nursing experience; four of which shall have been in supervisory, teaching or administrative capacity; or
3. A baccalaureate degree in nursing and seven years of satisfactory nursing experience, five of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or
4. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.

Department Preferences

DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES:
• Acute care experience with knowledge of ventilator care, IV drips (i.e, diuretics, vasopressors, anticoagulants), telemetry monitoring with the interpretation of EKG rhythms, blood transfusions, ACLS certified
• Understands and applies the technical and procedural aspects of one's job including collaborating with various departments
• Reviews and complies with corporate personnel policies, procedures and city-wide contracts.
• Demonstrates familiarity of CMS, DOH, Joint Commission regulations
• Effectively utilizes appropriate computer applications and programs
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written
• Participates in developing and implementing philosophy, objectives, policies, and standards of nursing service and education.
• Demonstrates knowledge acquired through formal learning, professional development, and work experience
• Demonstrates current clinical knowledge of best practices and regulations impacting healthcare facilities
