Job Description

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Director of Development & Engagement serves on the CEO’s senior leadership team and provides strategic leadership in financial development to advance the YMCAs mission through annual giving, special events, government and foundation grants, endowment bequests and gifts . This position requires a dynamic, creative, and driven individual in a leadership position. This position provides strategic leadership to diversify, strengthen and grow the YMCA’s base of support. The DDE assists the CEO in developing an actively engaged Donor Relations Advisory Committee which could lead to Board Volunteers that positions the Y as a community convener and collaborator to address critical social issues.

The primary objective is to raise financial support and accountability by cultivating relationships with donors, members, individuals, corporations, program participants, volunteers and vendors.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each primary duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES :
  • Bachelor's degree required, additional further certification is a plus
  • Master’s Preferred.
  • Strong work tenure: at least five years of experience in the fund development field preferably with successful management of a small non-profit organization.
  • YMCA Organizational Leadership Certification Preferred
  • Ability to relate to top community leaders and diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Working knowledge of giving and charitable vehicles.
  • Ability to create interpretive materials to enable potential donors to understand the YMCA and how they contribute to the achievement of its mission.
  • Knowledge of the media and its use in gaining exposure for YMCA events and programs.
  • Foundation and government grant writing expertise.
  • Proven track record and significant experience in nonprofit fundraising and Knowledge of fundraising techniques, finances and budgeting for nonprofits along with donor development
  • Must be able to take initiative and maintain good communications with staff, donors, and organizational colleagues.
  • Experience in managing development personnel.


  • Essential Functions

  • Oversees and Manages the Development Department
  • Develops organizational goals and strategic plans for fundraising, balancing long-term direction and short-term requirements. Manage systems and resources, including the development budget, needed to carry out the fundraising plans plus engagement activities with program participants and members.
  • Engages key external alliances to encourage individual and philanthropic support through a variety of fundraising and development vehicles.
  • Responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individuals, foundations and corporations, with a long-term relationship-management approach, to meet fundraising goals, improve engagement, and increase overall lifetime giving.
  • Develops appropriate fundraising policies and procedures for the association. Monitors for quality and accuracy transactions and progress of donors.
  • Develops processes and is actively involved in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting gift prospects. Maintains database resource file on top prospects and donors.
  • Directs and coordinates association fundraising marketing development, annual campaign and endowment programs.
  • Prepares and coordinates proposals for grants from government sources and private foundations.
  • Actively engages the board in challenging conversations and decision making to advance the Y's impact when serving as the primary staff liaison to the Donor Relations Committee and other assigned committees on the Board of Directors. Develops strategies to increase volunteer involvement at all levels of financial development.
  • Tracks all gifts and pledges by source and purpose and provides reports monthly or as needed.
  • Provides training in fundraising. Educates, motivates and provides feedback to individuals related to best practices in the fundraising process.
  • Creates and implements effective communication strategies with compelling messages that inspire others to accomplish the mission and cause with maximum impact. Develops communication plans to ensure members, participants, and the community understand the case for support.
  • Represents the CEO in the community as needed.
