The Director of Engineering is responsible for leading, strategizing, and executing engineering and quality activities for Hale Products. This includes setting strategic and tactical objectives, providing visionary leadership on new product development initiatives, developing comprehensive product and technology roadmaps, leading and developing the engineering team, and optimizing engineering resources. Additionally, the Director will drive sustaining engineering efforts and oversee critical and strategic quality and compliance activities related to product and product certifications.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Champion objectives focused on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost.
  • Lead cost-reduction, quality improvement, and efficiency projects.
  • Oversee all product modification and improvement activities that align with strategic objectives.
  • Ensure all designs align with Operations and Sourcing goals and capabilities.
  • Implement and maintain advanced technical quality assurance and control systems and activities.
  • Define and specify the implementation of standards, methods, and procedures for inspecting, testing, and evaluating the precision, accuracy, and reliability of products.
  • Assist product support areas in gathering and analyzing data.
  • Determine Quality and Regulatory objectives and link those objectives to company KPIs.
  • Partner cross-functionally to establish product quality, compliance, and regulatory strategies.
  • Monitor evolving regulations, standards, and governmental agency activities, interpret relevant information, and take appropriate actions to inform and educate stakeholders and revise appropriate processes and policies.
  • Establish quality and reliability standards by studying product and consumer requirements with members of management, production operators, technicians, and engineers.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Leadership, Talent, and Team Development
  • Provide visionary leadership to the organization and support strategic, cross-functional, and change initiatives.
  • Set both long- and short-range goals and develop the team.
  • Structure, manage, and mentor the team to achieve optimal performance.
  • Conduct performance appraisals with the team on an annual basis, setting goals and objectives, completing regular feedback sessions, reviewing training, and developing the team.
  • Meet or exceed product development and engineering targets.
  • Drive results and support all other departments, vendors, distributors, and customers.
  • Deliver business results to the corporation.

Strategic Development
  • Develop strategic and tactical plans in pursuit of growth and profitable objectives.
  • Prioritize new product opportunities and recommend development plans.
  • Work with process owners to ensure that KPIs are collected to monitor progress.
  • Use 80/20 methodology to eliminate unnecessary product complexity to drive profitability and achieve product growth.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Experience:
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive engineering experience in highly engineered, high-mix low volume businesses in manufacturing.
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Pump/compressor/hydraulic/pneumatic design experience is a plus.
  • Exposure to Design for Six Sigma and considerable strength/experience in new product development processes and systems.
  • Experience with sheet metal design, weldments, and fabricated assemblies.

Education:
  • B.S. in Engineering required, advanced degree preferred.

Abilities:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience working in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented global environment.
  • Problem solver with excellent technical abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to use an ERP system, preferably JD Edwards.
  • Skilled with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to program DriveWorks for SolidWorks preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities with a commitment to company values and ethics.
  • Proven streamlining, value creation, process improvement - process optimization and team building skills.
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and a proven history in developing and implementing strategies to resolve recurrent performance issues and conflicts.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across various departments and levels of the organization.
  • Strategic mindset that can balance long-term objectives with immediate operational needs.
  • Proven financial acumen to manage budgets and optimize resources effectively.
  • Superior leadership and team-building skills with a demonstrated track record of leading teams to achieve best-in-class results.
  • Experience in coaching/mentoring direct and indirect reports to influence their performance.
