Work includes maintaining inventory and records of signs and materials and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Position Description
Performs entry-level transportation related work installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signs, mailboxes, and delineators in a district. Work includes maintaining inventory and records of signs and materials and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign installation. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and standard practices and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.
Essential Duties:
District Sign Tech I:
- Assists transportation maintenance crews with maintenance-related work as required; may respond to assist with emergency
situations/conditions - Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products
- Issues signs to maintenance sections/transportation crews; uses tools and equipment and moves signs and related
materials - Maintains expense records and inventory of materials, supplies and equipment
- Measures and calculates amount of materials needed
- Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other items related to these duties
- Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs
- Operates radios
- Performs and maintains inventory of signs
- Performs preventive maintenance on sign truck
- Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control
Devices (MUTCD) and other departmental guidance - Performs other job responsibilities as assigned
District Sign Tech II:
In addition to the above
- Orders supplies and materials from district shop
- Orders signs from the regional sign shop
- Conducts nighttime luminaire inspections to ensure reflectivity of signs, delineators, stripping, and retroreflective
pavement markers (RPMs) - Inspects roadways to identify sign and delineator deficiencies and recommend repairs
- Maintains expense records and inventory of materials, supplies and equipment
- Measures and calculates amount of materials needed
- Mixes and places concrete for sign support foundations; moves cement bags and other items related to these duties
- Operates a boom and bucket truck and/or specialized sign truck to install roadway signs
- Performs preventive maintenance on sign truck
District Sign Tech III:
In addition to the above
- May assist in scheduling and assigning work
- May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications
- Trains other technicians on sign installation and safety procedures
- Issues signs to maintenance sections/transportation crews; uses tools and equipment and moves signs and related
materials
District Sign Tech IV:
In addition to the above
- Issues signs to maintenance sections/transportation crews; uses tools and equipment and moves signs and related
materials - Serves as a lead worker by advising, training, and instructing employees in shop policies and procedures; acting as a
resource for complex questions; presenting workflow and operational updates to the supervisor/manager; providing input on team
members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operations coverage - Issues signs to maintenance sections/transportation crews; uses tools and equipment and moves signs and related
materials - Orders supplies and materials from district shop
- Repairs and installs signs, supports, foundations and delineators in accordance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control
Devices (MUTCD) and other departmental guidance - Trains other technicians on sign installation and safety procedures
Minimum Qualifications:
District Sign Tech I:
No experience or education required.
District Sign Tech II:
- 1 YEAR Sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment
operation, or related work experience.
(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent)
District Sign Tech III:
- 2 YEAR Sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy equipment
operation, or related work experience.
(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent)
District Sign Tech IV:
- 5 YEARS in sign installation and/or repair, roadway maintenance, construction, transportation engineering support, heavy
equipment operation, or related work experience
(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part time equivalent)
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 90 calendar days from date of employment.
