The South Regional Division (SRD) maintains liaisons with directors and division heads of the General Office (GO) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) officials, public service agencies and the general public. This team of engineers and support staff has contributed, and continues to contribute, to enhancements that are present throughout southern New Mexico.

Why does the job exist?

The purpose of this position is to provide technical support in the development of standard drawings, project specifications and Notices to Contractors ensuring that these contract documents correspond to highway and bridge construction plans. This entails coordination with the Project Development Engineers (PDEs), District staff, Department Subject Matter Experts and consultants.

How does it get done?

The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to:
* Performing preparation of the most complex exhibits, plans, engineering calculations and cost estimates.
* Collaborating and conferring with developers, architects, engineers, contractors and the general public.
* Interpreting and explaining laws, codes and regulation related to development activities.
* Performing the most complex GIS operations.
* Leading in the preparation of reports to be used by professional and managerial employees.
* Performing preparation of drawings, plans, maps for most complex CAD production.
* Maintaining official maps, drawing and master plans; research and reference material for public and staff use.
* Interacting with staff who may be in the field or in an office setting.
* Assisting with permitting processes.
* Assisting and coordinating with other local, state, and federal agencies in the administration of permits.
* Performing quality assurance/quality control of data and coordinate with inclusion of data into appropriate databases.
* May train lower-level Engineering Technicians in overall duties.
* Incorporating direction and guidance from senior level engineers for projects and process implementation.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:

* Road design specifications, codes or manuals published by organizations such as American Association State Highway and Transportation Officials, American Concrete Institute,
or Federal Highway Administration.
* Working with the New Mexico Department of Transportation standards specifications for highway and bridge construction.
* Calculating mathematical computations such as volume and area from construction drawings.
* Producing construction design plans using a computer aided design software - AutoCAD and Civil 3D
* Experience in design and construction of highways and bridges.
* Experience in writing technical reports.
* Experience in using computer applications.

High School Diploma or equivalent and eight (8) years of relevant experience. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.

Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is generally performed in an office setting with field work in varying weather conditions on multiple projects. May work extended hours and statewide travel including some overnight travel will be required. Sitting/standing/driving for extended periods of time and extended periods of work at a computer terminal with some bending may be required. Communication with the general public and public agencies on a frequent basis. Lifting up to fifty pounds may be required.
