The University of Virginia School of Law seeks a Financial Aid Counselor to join the Office of Financial Aid, Education and Planning. The Office of Financial Aid, Education, and Planning comprises a small yet formidable team of three. We're currently seeking to add a Financial Aid Counselor to our ranks. As a dynamic and close-knit group, we're committed to delivering exceptional service by equipping students with the financial knowledge and resources necessary to make informed decisions throughout their law school journeys.

This new, non-supervisory role presents an outstanding opportunity for someone looking to build and enhance their financial aid expertise within a growth-oriented environment. This position requires most work to be performed in person at the Law School, with the opportunity to perform a limited amount of work remotely in accordance with Law School policy.

Responsibilities of the Financial Aid Counselor:
  • Counsel existing and prospective law students on financial aid programs, eligibility criteria, deadlines, and application procedures.
  • Assist in awarding federal, state, institutional, and private sources of financial aid to students within appropriate guidelines and regulations.
  • Assist with responding to incoming financial aid calls, emails, and walk-in requests.
  • Receive and carefully review financial aid forms and supporting documents to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Scan and index a variety of documents and communications into imaging software.
  • Conduct student loan entrance and exit counseling sessions and assist with group presentations and webinars.
  • Educate students on financial issues such as debt management, loan repayment, and overall financial literacy.
  • Maintain department's external scholarship database.
  • Assist the Director in running UVA's Virginia Loan Forgiveness Program.
  • Generate reports and complete Verification and C Code reviews for students as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree or relevant experience.
  • Experience: At least two years of professional work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two years of experience working in financial aid, student services, or student affairs.
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft, ImageNow, and Department of Education web applications.
  • Experience working directly with graduate or professional degree students.
This is a full-time University Managerial and Professional staff position with benefits . This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
