Job Description

Position SUMMARY

The Lab Operations Specialist supports Health First, Inc., leadership team in various clinical transformation initiatives, strategic implementation of laboratory modernization, and improving clinical operations focused on patient safety. The incumbent implements and operationalizes key strategic initiatives in the department. As a key contributor to the laboratory leadership team, the incumbent supports departmental and organizational key performance indicators meet its goals.

Primary Accountabilities

  1. Performs oversight tasks, where leadership vacancies exist, on all clinical laboratory testing operations of various complexities, in a timely and efficient manner using various laboratory equipment, devices or via manual method in compliance with all Health First policies and procedures, along with all pertinent federal and state accreditation agency requirements. Provide strategic and operational oversight of clinical chemistry, toxicology, transfusion services, urinalysis, hemostasis, hematology, microbiology, immunology, pathology, and point of care, as assigned by lab leadership.
  2. Directly supports the System Director, Lab (or designee) to implement clinical transformation initiatives in all assigned lab modalities across the system. This includes operational and clinical process improvement in staffing and scheduling, advancing patient safety through the adoption of High-Reliability Organization (HRO) principles, strategic design of care delivery models to include technological advancements, and leadership support where vacancies exist.
  3. Shows commitment to a culture of continuous quality improvement through the incorporation of evidenced medicine, benchmarking, and implementation of recommended guidelines (i.e., ASCPs "Choosing Wisely List", ASM, AABB, ADLM best-practice guidelines).
  4. Demonstrates the ability to effectively use and manage various electronic medical record (EMR) applications used for patient records and results as established by laboratory procedures. Provide support to users on departmental EMR competency. Efficiently abstracts information and provides actionable recommendations to laboratory leadership.
  5. Performs data analysis, research, reviews, and provides laboratory leadership with summaries and recommendations based on evidence-based data.
  6. Communicates effectively within the laboratory, external clinical departments, other healthcare professionals, clients, and customers. Observes key communication behaviors that create positive care interactions. Reports issues and departmental needs to the supervisor.
  7. Assists laboratory leadership in coordinating and maintaining a comprehensive quality control, improvement, quality assurance program, orientation, training, competency requirements, proficiency testing, supply management, and document control to include writing and revising policies and procedures. Coordinates accreditation inspections, and peer inspections, submits corrective action responses, and root-cause-analyses, monitors and oversees lab safety portals, and coordinates with lab leaders in implementation and follow-up of appropriate quality-related corrective actions.
  8. Complies with the Health First I-CARE values and demonstrates effective communication with co-workers and management to include proper escalation when necessary. Available to meet laboratory staffing demands as assigned by supervisor. May be appointed as lab's Safety Officer as needed.
  9. Directly supports the laboratory director in meeting the financial, fiscal, and net operating income goals of the laboratory department.


Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Master's of Science Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, MBA, MHA, MPH, or related field.
  • Licensure: Medical Technologist licensure by the State of Florida and by CLIA.
  • Certification: MLS or MT (ASCP).
  • Work Experience: Five years in healthcare leadership.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Must pass color blindness test, proficient in required computer applications, work autonomously with minimal supervision, strong skills in critical thinking, prioritization and organization of tasks, communication skills (written and verbal in English).


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensure: Lab Supervisor license by the State of Florida.
  • Certification: MLS(ASCP) also formerly known as MT(ASCP), MT (AAB), MT (AMT), Specialist Certification by ASCP (SBB, SC, SH, SM, etc.).
  • Work Experience: Ten years in leadership as at manager-level or above.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Laboratory strategic leadership, system or corporate-level healthcare leadership, experience in leading large and diverse group of laboratory professionals.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Majority of time involves sitting or standing; occasional walking, bending, stooping.
  • Long periods of computer time or at workstation.
  • Light work that may include lifting or moving objects up to 20 pounds with or without assistance.
  • May be exposed to inside environments with varied temperatures, air quality, lighting and/or low to moderate noise.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Visual acuity and hand-eye coordination to perform tasks.
  • Workspace may vary from open to confined; on site or remote.
  • May require travel to various facilities within and beyond county perimeter; may require use of personal vehicle.
