The School of Animal Sciences is seeking applicants with primary skills in laboratory techniques to fill a staff position. Primary responsibilities for this position are supporting research across two laboratories: Breeding/Genetics and Mastitis.

Expected Candidate Attributes: The laboratory support specialist will assist with research performed in the Breeding & Genetics Laboratory, and the Mastitis & Immunology Laboratory. Research from these laboratories focus on identifying genomic markers for economically-relevant traits, disease tolerance, food efficiency, maternal influence on traits, disease detection, udder health, and milk quality.

Duties for this specialist will include, but are not limited to, the following: 1) monitoring, maintaining and supervising laboratory safety management according to Environmental Health and Safety and IACUC requirements; 2) training, supervising and assisting students and other personnel working in the laboratory; 3) processing, organizing and analyzing samples from research studies and/or extension programs; 4) developing and/or improving laboratory techniques with their respective written protocols; 5) quoting, ordering and managing laboratory supplies; 6) maintaining laboratory equipment; and 7) proofreading protocols, manuscripts and/or research grants.

The successful candidate will be highly organized, have good time management skills, have a strong work ethic, and take pride in their work.

Required Qualifications

Experience with large animals, molecular techniques, and data analysis; Experience managing and maintaining a research laboratory; Experience in a laboratory setting either through education or previous experience.

Preferred Qualifications

B.S. degree in agriculture, biochemistry, or biology or related field; Experience in a molecular laboratory; Working knowledge of laboratory safety procedures; Working knowledge of chemical and biological laboratory procedures; Previous experience analyzing biological samples (e.g., blood, milk, tissue, etc.); Demonstrated ability to learn and implement new analytical procedures; Demonstrated ability to teach new laboratory techniques to other personnel including students; Strong interpersonal communication skills; Demonstrated laboratory management and supervision skills; Working knowledge of and experience with spreadsheet software.
