Position Summary

The University of Georgia animal care and use program is looking for a talented veterinarian to join our collegial team in support of the University's growing animal care and use program, including the high quality AAALAC-accredited program.

Specifically, we are seeking applications to engage a full-time non-tenure clinical track faculty veterinarian in the Office of Research with an appointment in the College of Veterinary Medicine to provide regulatory and clinical service for the animal care and use program and to participate in instructional and scholarly activities. This veterinarian will serve as Associate Director in the Office of Animal Care and Use, as well as serving as a clinical veterinarian in University Research Animal Resources.

The University of Georgia is a public land-grant-sea-grant institution and has three basic missions: instruction, public service, and research.

The animal care and use program provides oversight for all university owned animals used for research or instruction. The program is expansive and unusually complex, and includes biomedical, agricultural, and wildlife research and instructional activities under various colleges. This broad variety of activities uses diverse species; a large ABSL3/ABSL3-Ag facility, rodent barrier/containment, aquaculture, agricultural, and nonhuman primate research.

Reporting to the Director of OACU, the duties of the Associate Director include participating in oversight of compliance with applicable policy, guidelines, and laws; supporting the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC); and consulting with faculty on the development of research projects. The Associate Director will also supervise 4 OACU staff employees. Duties include occasional overnight inspections. Some inspections (2-3/year) require overnight stays (1-2 nights) at hotels.

Additional duties within University Research Animal Resources (URAR) include providing veterinary care and training investigators, research staff, and other professionals as a component of the promotion of continuous improvement of a high-quality, service-oriented research resource.

Further duties encompass mentoring and instructing veterinary students, externs, and residents as part of an emerging academic comparative medicine program based in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

This is a non-tenure clinical track faculty position at the Clinical Assistant or Associate Professor level with appointment in the College of Veterinary Medicine's Department of Population Health. The promotion process is managed by the department Chair.

Board eligibility or certification in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine or related discipline or have board certification.

Must pass a background check and random drug and alcohol testing.

Must qualify to work with Select Agents and work successfully in a biocontainment research environment.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification

1. History with animal research laws and regulations and AAALAC International standards.
2. License to practice veterinary medicine in a state in the United States and the ability to gain licensure in the state of Georgia within 3 months of hire.
3. History of working with a variety of animals, such as rodents, rabbits, ferrets, cats, dogs, farm animals, nonhuman primates, reptiles, and fish.
4. Supervisory background including directing employee activities and priorities and providing guidance and performance feedback.
5. Enrollment and participation in the Occupational Health and Safety Program and maintenance of all required vaccinations or other required prophylaxis based on research being conducted at all facilities.
6. Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA).

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

1. A broad knowledge of the methods, procedures and techniques involved in animal-based research compliance as well as a deep understanding of oversight agency regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to animal-based research compliance.
2. Extensive knowledge of the practice of clinical laboratory animal medicine, and the ability to apply that knowledge in training others in biomethodology in a variety of animal species.
3. Excellent understanding of the principles of virology, bacteriology, and parasitology and their application to colony health monitoring programs.
4. Broad understanding of comparative organismal biology and pathophysiology of conventional and laboratory animal species, and the common diseases of laboratory animals and their diagnosis, management, and/or treatment.
5. Knowledge of animal care and veterinary medicine.
6. Ability to observe animal behavior and assess and treat problems in a wide variety of species.
7. Knowledge of zoonotic diseases and principles of biocontainment.
8. Proven reliability and ability to work independently to complete usual job responsibilities.
9. Exemplary interpersonal skills, including strong active listening skills, the capacity to collegially interact with members of the university community at all levels, and maintaining and exhibiting professionalism at all times
10. Effective written and oral communication skills including the ability to facilitate problem resolution, receive constructive feedback and direction, appropriately manage confidential information, and promote excellent customer service.
11. Initiative, flexibility, and the ability to work in a team environment are highly valued.
12. Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize workflow while providing excellent work under tight deadlines.
13. Ability to use computer software, including but not limited to, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel. Ability to use computer software to record data.
14. Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and problem sensing and solving skills.

Service

The position's roles within OACU (45%):

• Support IACUC functions by conducting the veterinary review of animal research projects (IACUC protocols); attending IACUC meetings; participating with IACUC and USDA inspections and AAALAC, International site visits; and investigating reported adverse events, unexpected outcomes, possible non-compliances, and concerns related to animal research.
• Participate in other activities and projects to meet OACU goals and mission such as managing a post-approval monitoring program; quality assurance and improvement; drafting and updating institutional policies, guidelines, and SOPs; and outreach communication with the research community.

The position's role within URAR (15%):

• Contribute to the clinical services team in performing and directing medical management of laboratory animals; collaborating with researchers regarding clinical plans for their research animals; performing surgeries; managing pain control strategies; participating in the veterinarian on-call rotation outside of business hours, including weekends, holidays, and ABSL3 environment.
• Serve faculty through consulting on the development of research projects and performing veterinary services, for fee, for research projects.
• Build productive relationships with external research collaborators (e.g., industry, academia) through researcher and veterinary contacts
