Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. The hospital provides a wide range of medical, surgical, diagnostic, therapeutic and family support services to the residents of Central Harlem, West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. Duties & Responsibilities

Technologist performs clinical testing in laboratory areas where he/she is fully trained and in compliance with Federal, State and City regulations.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Technologist performs clinical testing in laboratory areas where he/she is fully trained and in compliance with Federal, State and City regulations.
• The technologist obtains or receives laboratory specimens, including blood, urine, and body fluids, and performs clinical laboratory tests, obtaining data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease; performs a variety of standardized procedures, both manual and automated, using established standards and controls in order to ensure correct data.
• The technologist understands the principles of and competently performs a variety of techniques where he/she is trained, performs quality control and preventive maintenance, and correctly performs analysis and interprets results obtained as far as accuracy, acceptability and critical limits.
• The technologist works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines, and records and files all data obtained.
• Process and accession patient specimen.
• Perform emergency and routine testing accurately.
• Perform other testing as time permits with accuracy, efficiency, and cost-effective methods.
• Telephone critical value results promptly and document them immediately.
• Correctly prepare reagents and test samples.
• Be able to set-up (start-up) instruments where needed.
• Be able to enter and retrieve patient data accurately utilizing the laboratory computer system if applicable.
• Become familiar with troubleshooting techniques for major instruments where applicable.
• Participate in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new methods and equipment if requested.
• Performs correlations studies, linearities studies, dilution studies and precision studies.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist issued by the NYSED; and
2. Candidates must also meet one of the qualification requirements of a laboratory supervisor as outlined in Title 1 0, Section 58-1.4 of the New York Public Health Law.
