The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (Department) is offering an exciting position within the Habitat Conservation Planning Branch's Lake and Streambed Alteration (LSA) Program where you will collaborate with colleagues across the state, lead data management and analysis, participate in coordination and outreach, and be part of a program that helps protect California's diverse fish, wildlife, plants, and habitats. This position provides a unique opportunity to exercise your critical thinking skills while diving head-first into law and policy, permitting, data management, and much more.

Duties include working collaboratively with Department headquarters and regional staff on development and implementation of the LSA Program, developing policy, regulations, and legislative bill analyses; collaborate with Regional scientists to evaluate staffing and data needs, and permit compliance; work internally with Wildlife, Fisheries, and Water Branches to develop scientifically-based permit protection measures; lead the effort to maintain current and consistent permitting documents; and coordinate with external partners and outreach to the public for the LSA Program.

This position is 12 months Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.

Working Conditions
The position requires the use of a computer for several hours each day, the completion of office tasks that require sitting, standing, and walking to other locations; attendance at meetings and participation in videoconferencing calls. This position allows for an in-office/telework hybrid work schedule, and in-office attendance may change based on operational need. The office building is located in West Sacramento with free parking.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Experience analyzing and managing data using Excel, R, and ArcGIS software. Knowledge of Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreements and CEQA. Ability to multitask, adapt to changes in priorities, and maintain a consistent quality of work during periods when workload is heavy and subject to short deadlines. Maintain the confidence and cooperation of others by demonstrating competence and being dependable, flexible, and a problem solver. Initiative and demonstrated ability to act independently as well as part of a team, open-mindedness, flexibility, and tact. Ability to provide leadership, mentorship, and training as the lead scientist for the LSA Program.
