Job Description:

Responsive to the safety and security needs of a diverse population of faculty, staff,
students and visitors at a multi-campus college; to protect life and property and enforce laws of the Commonwealth and the rules and regulations of the college within the appropriate jurisdictional parameters; and, to serve the college community by providing professional and efficient police and safety services. The primary purpose of the position is to provide for the safety and security of people and property within the jurisdictional parameters of the position. Concurrently, the position has the vital purpose of advancing the college's mission and image as a dynamic and positive academic environment.

Classified: Compensation and Benefits

The hiring range for this position is $41,307.00 - $55,764.00. Salary will be commensurate with competencies and experience. with funding through June 30, 2023.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be certified or willing to complete all legal and regulatory requirements to obtain and maintain certification as a law enforcement officer in the Commonwealth of Virginia as defined in Code of Virginia § 15.2-1705 to include not having committed any of the infractions defined in Code of Virginia § 15.2-1707.B.
  • Must be able to function mentally and physically under stress and emergency situations to include gathering information and completing documentation in accordance with professional standards and department policy.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately handle agency issued weapons and qualify annually in the use of agency issued firearms and less-than-lethal weapons in accordance with the minimum standards established by DCJS and the department.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to operate state and department vehicles in accordance with laws, regulations, and department policy.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to include the ability to give clear oral and written instructions to elicit compliance with law, policies and regulations in both routine and emergency situations.
  • Must be able to testify truthfully and factually in official hearings including court.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Must have a high school education or have passed a high school equivalency examination recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Be at least 21 years of age upon graduation from a basic law enforcement academy.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license recognized by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Possess and maintain current CPR/AED/First Aid Certification or complete the training when assigned by the department.
  • Must successfully complete a background check and drug screen test.
