Maintenance Technician I - Landscape Transportation

The City of Roanoke is seeking a dedicated and skilled Maintenance Technician I to join our Turf and Landscape Crew. This role is essential in maintaining the city's Rights-of-Way (ROW) by performing a variety of turf and landscape maintenance tasks. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating and maintaining various equipment, ensuring the city's landscapes are kept in pristine condition.

Key Responsibilities:

• Turf Maintenance: Adhere to an established mowing cycle and perform turf maintenance activities across City Rights-of-Way.
• Equipment Operation: Skillfully operate and perform routine daily service and maintenance on a wide variety of equipment, including but not limited to Ventrac, zero-turn and walk-behind mowers, string trimmers, edgers, and leaf blowers.
• Landscape Maintenance: Engage in semi-skilled landscape maintenance tasks, including minor tree pruning, aerating, overseeding, mulching, turf renovations, and other landscape duties as required.
• Snow Removal: Operate heavy and light equipment for snow removal and assist with emergency tasks as needed, which may include working during nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications:

• Education: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
• Experience: Two to three years of related experience and/or training in the assigned trades area, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Licenses and Certifications:
• Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have the ability to obtain it within 12 months of employment.
• May be required to obtain a Registered Technician Pesticide License and a Fertilizer Applicator Certification within 12 months of employment.

Skills and Abilities:

• Proficient in operating and maintaining a variety of turf maintenance equipment.
• Strong knowledge of turf and landscape maintenance practices.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently when required.
• Flexibility to work during emergency situations, including outside of regular business hours.

Work Environment: This role involves outdoor work in various weather conditions, requiring physical stamina and the ability to handle equipment and perform tasks that may be physically demanding.
