Our mission is to protect the integrity of New Mexico's livestock industry. Our team of about sixty full time inspectors and another sixty full and part time deputies continuously patrol and perform inspections around our state to help keep our livestock free from disease and safe from theft. We are also the office of the State Veterinarian, whose team collaborates with various government and private sector partners to ensure that our state remains free of diseases.

Why does the job exist?

This position exists to provide the agency with the expertise and hands-on labor needed to deploy technology that streamlines and automates the agency's various business processes. The incumbent applies his expertise in a variety of technical areas to deploy, configure, maintain and support the network, server, web and desktop environments for the agency. The position entails a mix of both infrastructure deployment and applications development under general supervision.

How does it get done?

System and Network Administration: Responsibilities in this area are to build and configure physical and virtual application servers and their backbone infrastructure, install all needed NMLB applications on them. I also maintain, troubleshoot, and update these devices. This includes maintaining the Active directory of users and computers environment assuring log in ability, permissions, remote connectivity capabilities, creation of new users, disabling of accounts, etc. Extensive use of PowerShell for all manner of tasks. Microsoft Azure and Office 365 support. Maintaining updated documentation of this is another ongoing process involving our document management system. Examples of such documentation would be maintaining records of IP Address use, Product licensing, Data Storage space use and allocation, etc. Antivirus server setup, deployment of clients, and handling of intrusions as they occur is also a part of this duty category. Another part of this is creating and maintaining a backup/disaster recovery plan. Tools/Applications used here are: VMWare, HPE Simplivity, Windows Server versions 2012 and up. Basic networking skills along with maintaining and configuring firewall devices are part of this duty. Fortinet Firewalls/Switches are used here. Some Linux administration involving docker containers is also performed.

Basic Desktop and technical support: Assist with general technical support as needed including general network connectivity, desktop computer technical problems, building and configuring and installing new workstations as needed. This category also includes smart phone configuration and troubleshooting, printer connectivity and troubles, as well as some remote assistance of field personnel as needed.

Software Development/Support: Support and assist in developing and maintaining custom applications developed using FileMaker Database. Assist in supporting and developing web applications using HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and PHP. Cloud application support along with any other 3rd party software we have or may procure.

Good communications skills both verbal and written are a must.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for this job will need strong system administration knowledge in the area of Windows Server Administration, PowerShell, and the Windows desktop operating system. They will need to have a working knowledge of VMWare. HPE Simplivity Experience welcomed. Knowledge of Fortinet devices is desired. The ideal candidate would also have some basic programming/software development skills in the area of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, but any programming skills are welcomed. Knowledge of FileMaker is desired. The ideal candidate will be a motivated self starter that will proactively take on issues and suggest solutions to problems as they arise. The desired candidate will have good communications kills both verbal and written.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, Engineering or similar technical degree and two (2) years of experience in systems administration. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
