Job Summary:

The Immunopathology and Hematopathology Laboratory, affiliated with the Section of Allergy and Immunology, Department of Pediatrics is looking for a motivated individual interested in laboratory immunology. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be involved in developing novel assays for immune diagnostics and participating in translational research projects.

The individual who accepts this position will spend 80% of their time on flow cytometry, cell culture-based assays, protein gels, and Western blots, and will be involved in collaborative research projects. Working with the laboratory medical director and the laboratory supervisor, this individual will train on flow cytometry techniques and assist with developing assays for the detection of a variety of human immune cells (immune phenotype) and assays for analysis of human immune function, both of which will support diagnosis and management of immune-related disorders. Additionally, this individual will also be involved with research projects focused on understanding the immunological response in food allergy and will assist with cryopreservation and storage of research study samples along with maintaining a database with sample information. 20% of this position's time will be spent on maintaining detailed laboratory notes and assisting with routine laboratory maintenance and laboratory supply inventory. This individual is expected to attend laboratory meetings and present their experimental data when required and will have the opportunity to attend other immunology-related meetings and seminars. This position offers the opportunity to participate in developing manuscripts for publication.

Key Responsibilities:

Entry and Intermediate Level:

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions.
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects.
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research.
  • Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting, and communicating results.
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas.
  • Review, complete, and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information.


Intermediate Level Only:

  • Independently and creatively identify laboratory solutions.
  • Independently review, develop, and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects.
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Assist and train junior team members.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Entry Level:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or a related field.
    • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.


Intermediate Level:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or a related field.
    • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • One (1) year professional-level research experience.


Preferred Qualifications:

Entry Level:

  • Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in an experimental or wet laboratory.


Intermediate Level:

  • Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or a related field.
  • Two (2) years of experience in an experimental or wet laboratory


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Entry and Intermediate Levels:

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.

  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as:

Entry Level: $45,000 to $57,240

Intermediate Level: $48,970 to $62,290

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
