Germanna Community College is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System. Germanna Community College is seeking a Payroll Specialist. The Payroll Specialist is responsible for payroll administration in conjunction with SSC (shared service center). Analyze/resolve payroll issues, ensure compliance with Federal and State, and College requirements related to employment and taxation, benefit reconciliations, reporting, and processing of timesheets/paychecks. Position includes oversight of leave administration to include processing, adjusting, and resolving leave balance issues.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Management of payrolls in conjunction with SSC (shared service center) to ensure accuracy in payments, deductions, and reporting; Reconciliation of various deductions, benefits and TLAM (time leave absence management); Timesheet management. Semi-Monthly and quarterly payroll and yearend accrual reporting.
  • Leave Administrator for absence management system. Developing and managing processes for managers and employees and leave system, Semi-Monthly leave, and year-end leave liability. reporting.
  • Collects and assesses data quality and management of internal (GCC, VCCS, SSC) and external (COV) HR and Payroll systems; Helps create and supports data integrity and security initiatives; Performs systems audit to ensure accuracy of data and compliance with policies of GCC, VCCS, SSC and COV; Creates reports and dashboards to share insights with the college's leaders and HR department.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Considerable knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of payroll and human resources policies and procedures; state and federal laws and regulations concerning payroll and payroll deductions, benefit plans and reporting.
  • Excellent computer skills including those of computerized payroll and human resources systems.
  • Ability to analyze mathematical data and assist in preparing financial/annual reports.
  • Intermediate/Advanced Proficiency in Excel and MS Office 365 applications.
  • Strong customer service skills with a high level of professionalism and discretion.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Public sector experience - Higher Education
  • Proficiency with HCM/PeopleSoft
