Why does the job exist?

This position will be responsible for the protection of human health and the environment by assessing hazardous waste permitting and waste management practices and providing oversight of site investigations, which includes corrective action at contaminated sites.

How does it get done?

- Evaluate technical plans and reports related to soil and groundwater investigations and remediation documents and activities
- Oversee soil and groundwater evaluations and remediation of contaminants at RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) facilities
- Review permit applications and prepare draft permits and serve as point of contact with assigned regulated facilities
- Perform research and attend trainings to stay updated on RCRA regulations
- Participate in public meetings to convey the New Mexico Environment Department¿s position and address stakeholder concerns
- Conduct site visits for regulatory oversight and guidance
- Provide updates to managers on project progress
- Prepare public notice documents and briefs for senior management on high-profile projects

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:
- Environmental site investigations
- Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Permitting and Corrective Action Process
- Working within a regulatory compliance and permitting framework
- Data analysis and presentation of samples of various environmental media, e.g., soil, groundwater, and soil gas

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Engineering and five (5) years of experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, Air Quality Management, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Hazardous Waste Management, Wildlife Management, and/or Water Resources. Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 25 pounds may be required. This position may require occasional In-state and out-of-state travel.
