Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health Professions (DHP) mission is to ensure safe and competent patient care by licensing health professionals, enforcing standards of practice, and providing information to health care practitioners and the public.

The purpose of this position is to coordinate, manage, and administer compliance monitoring of individuals and facilities regulated by the Board of Pharmacy, conduct activities related to inspections and continuing education audits resulting in possible disciplinary action which may include participation in hearings, and manage activities related to innovative pilot programs. This position independently reviews submitted documents and ensures related correspondence is properly prepared, disseminated, and maintained in accordance with record retention schedules and agency or Board policies. The position also provides operational support for the Board of Pharmacy, executive director, and deputy executive directors as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications

* Working knowledge of the statues and regulations of the Board of Pharmacy.
* Substantive knowledge of drugs and drug control laws with respect to prescription drugs.
* Demonstrated ability to identify valid prescriptions, accuracy of dispensed drugs, and perform root-cause analysis of dispensing errors.
* Documented knowledge of and abilities in pharmacy practice.
* Broad knowledge and familiarity with investigative techniques.
* Experience in performing or responding to pharmacy inspections and knowledge of the inspection pre-hearing consent order process.
* Extensive knowledge of the laws, regulations and procedures associated with the regulation of pharmacy and the adjudication of discipline and compliance cases.
* Experience in maintaining confidential information.
* Effective organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
* Strong computer skills in a Microsoft Windows environment utilizing Microsoft Windows environment, utilizing Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.
* Demonstrated ability to compose clear and concise written reports and correspondence, using grammar and punctuation standards with expertise in Word and Excel.
* Ability to independently review plans of corrective action and responses to inspection pre-hearing consent orders.
* Demonstrated ability to interpret, evaluate and analyze complex healthcare records, legal documents, compliance documents, and technical material to make independent, valid determinations and recommendations on compliance with the Code of Virginia, and other laws, regulations, and policies..
* Demonstrated ability to analyze work practices, procedures and problems and recommend improvements.
* Ability to multitask, effectively and independently manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
* Strong oral and written communications skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and interdependently, effectively managing regular interaction with Board and agency staff, representatives from other state boards, licensees, and the public.

Additional Considerations

* Experience in a regulatory environment regulating the practice of pharmacy and/or other environment monitoring the practice of pharmacy for compliance with state and/or federal requirements is preferred.
* Experience in the practice of pharmacy with some retail/community experience and some hospital or long-term care experience preferred.
* Demonstrated ability to utilize BOX or similar electronic file management system to manage files and workflow.
