The Boards and Commissions Division oversees administration of 28 professional and occupational licensing boards and commissions and approximately 100,000 individual licenses ranging from dentists and social workers to real estate brokers and cosmetologists. This position is located within the Division's Professional Licensing Bureau, based out of the Department's Albuquerque office.

Each board and commission has its own set of rules and its own licensing requirements. The Governor of New Mexico appoints members to boards and commissions who work closely with the Superintendent of the New Mexico Regulation and Licensing Department to protect consumer rights while promoting good business practices, safety and economic growth.

Why does the job exist?

The Licensing and Support Specialist will assist with day-to-day licensing matters, including receiving, processing, and approving applications for initial licensure and renewal of active licenses. This position may also review state and federal background checks for applicants seeking a professional license. The Licensing and Support Specialist will serve as a first contact for applicants and licenses, and manage phone calls and emails related to licensing requirements and status of applications. In addition to licensing responsibilities, the position will assist with administrative and operations support of their assigned Team, and may also be called upon to assist board administrators with supporting board meetings, including preparing meeting packets and other administrative duties.

How does it get done?

Some key responsibilities would be; to exemplify public service through accurate, professional and timely communication with applicants and licensees which will be measured in part by the following goals: serving the Team by answering and retuning phone messages within 24 hours; responding professionally to licensing emails within 48 hours; identifying pending applications that have not professed and proactively contact applicants under timelines as directed; and attend at least one training per year directly related to customer service. This team member will maintain a working knowledge of application and website information regarding licensing for assigned boards and proactively ask questions and provide recommendations to immediate supervisor with suggested ways to improve the licensed process and reduce unnecessary barriers.

Who are the customers?

Our customers are individuals applying for a professional license in any of the 28 professions regulated. The customer includes professionals, applicants, insurance and credentialing companies and members of the public who are dependent on the services provided by the licensed professional.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and creative thinker with excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to independently multi-task in a high volume environment with the possibility of frequent interruptions.
Extensive customer service experience or background and interest in assisting diverse groups.
Proficient in technology, including the complete Microsoft suite, electronic databases, data entry, and other forms of technology.
Experience in New Mexico state government, government licensing, other regulatory work; or background reading, interpreting, and applying statutes or regulations is preferred but not required.
Experience working with confidential information.
Finally, the ideal candidate should have the ability to communicate effectively, disseminate accurate information to others and be able to identify issues while problem solving to achieve the desired outcome.

Minimum Qualification

High School diploma or Equivalency and two (2) years of experience in office administration, budgeting, purchasing, finance, accounting, auditing, cash management and/or contract management. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must have and maintain current Drivers License, Defensive Driving Certificate and be able to pass Background Check. This position does not require supervising employees.

Working Conditions

Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
