Within the Medical School, the Office of Well-Being and the Office for Health Equity and Inclusion (OHEI) seek a driven Project Intermediate Manager to implement well-being initiatives and facilitate a culture of workplace well-being and inclusivity. This position will help promote, expand, and manage well-being initiatives across Michigan Medicine, building stronger coalitions, and enhancing impact and service to improve the quality of life at work.

The Intermediate Project Manager will have a broad scope of responsibilities and will be expected to work at all organizational levels to accomplish project deliverables. Daily job functions include applying professional expertise and service excellence to execute operational objectives and leverage experience to guide and inform decision-making and facilitate and engage in team-based problem-solving.

This position will report to the Office of Well-Being and will have additional reporting responsibilities to the Office of Health Equity and Inclusion.

Responsibilities*

Partner with the Office of Well-Being and the Office for Health Equity and Inclusion (OHEI), along with institutional partners, to implement goals and strategies and coordinate and champion initiatives aimed at establishing a climate of well-being, psychological safety, and DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) and belonging.

Responsibilities include:
  • Project Planning and Execution: Provide support and leadership to system-wide initiatives seeking outcomes that further diversity, equity & inclusion, belonging and well-being aims in tandem. Current projects include but are not limited to the support of: BASE+ (Belonging, Access, Safety, and Experience); championing psychological safety as a consideration and practice across Michigan Medicine, including providing anti-retaliation training and identifying methods to engage in culture change; developing anti-hate efforts and addressing polarizing differences in perspective to promote mutual understanding and working together across differences.
  • Strategic Leadership: Facilitate cross-functional project teams in a shared governance model, fostering teamwork and collaboration between the Office of Well-being and OHEI. Take charge of situational analyses, strategy development, and implementation planning for initiatives aimed at enhancing well-being and belonging.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including faculty, staff, learners and external partners, to share best practices, enhance project visibility and support, and achieve project objectives. Convene and engage stakeholders from various levels of the Michigan Medicine community to ensure alignment with project goals and incorporation of diverse perspectives, and provide frontline responses to inquiries received by OHEI and Well-Being, including identifying common inquiry themes, developing resources and referral information to address questions, and proactively addressing concerns at an institutional level.
  • Change Management: Oversee the application of change management protocols, ensuring smooth transitions during project rollouts and organizational changes. Facilitate training and development sessions for Michigan Medicine employees, including faculty, staff and learners, on culture and policy changes, as well as on change resilience.
  • Budget Management: Manage budgets and provide budget projections for projects overseen by this role, ensuring fiscal responsibility, transparent accounting, and maximizing resource efficiency.
  • Communication: Serve as the primary contact for project communications, providing stakeholders with regular updates about project status, impacts, and required actions. Develop and execute comprehensive communication strategies in collaboration with the OHEI Strategic Communications Manager to ensure consistent, culturally responsive, and effective messaging.
  • Content Creation and Dissemination: Create and manage project-related content for internal and external communications, including newsletters, press releases, social media updates, and website content, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
  • Branding and networking support: Develop and manage engagement strategies to increase office visibility and wellness initiatives, including organizing and creating a process to enhance office branding and expand professional networks.
  • Event Planning and Execution: Collaborate with the OHEI Events Manager on the planning and execution of events related to well-being, DEI, and belonging, ensuring they align with organizational objectives and provide valuable engagement opportunities for the Michigan Medicine community. Organize and facilitate workshops, trainings, seminars, and other events to promote well-being, DEI and belonging initiatives, enhancing community involvement and awareness.
  • Training and Professional Development: Provide development support of a DEI curriculum based on data and current resources. This includes conducting needs assessments and crowd-sourcing as necessary. Conduct and facilitate training sessions, workshops, and seminars for faculty, staff and learners to build DEI and well-being capacities within the organization. Employ strong intercultural communication skills to engage diverse participants in focus groups and other workshops.
  • Conflict Resolution: Mediate conflicts and disputes related to project objectives, team dynamics, or broader organizational issues. Use problem-solving skills and proactive communication to address opportunities for development and change, ensuring issues are resolved in a timely, effective manner.
  • Policy Development: Assist in the review, evaluation, and creation of policies and practices that foster DEI and well-being. Ensure that strategies and projects comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards.
  • Measurement and Reporting: Promote an organizational culture that values diversity, equity, inclusion, and well-being, implementing evidence-based practices and interventions. Develop and implement evaluation methodologies to assess program strengths and identify areas for improvement. Monitor project outcomes against benchmarks, deliver detailed reports on project success metrics, and evaluate return on investment.
  • Continuous Improvement: Actively seek the latest research and best practices in organizational well-being and DEI to continually refine and improve initiatives. Encourage a culture of innovation and continuous improvement, piloting new ideas and scaling successful interventions.
  • Perform other duties as directed.


Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred in a field relevant to Organizational Psychology, Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Health, Social Work, Public Policy, or related fields
  • Certification in Project Management (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2) is highly desirable
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience as a project manager, with demonstrated success in leading cross-functional teams
  • Proven track record in managing projects related to organizational development, DEI initiatives, well-being programs, or cultural change
  • Experience with executing strategic plans, from conception through implementation and evaluation
  • Experience in a higher education environment, a health system, or similarly complex organization
  • Proficiency in project management software (e.g., Smartsheet, Microsoft Project, Asana, Trello).
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce high-quality written and visual content for diverse audiences and purposes
  • Exceptional verbal communication abilities. Skilled at providing training content related to wellness and belonging, facilitating difficult conversations, and negotiating between differing opinions and interests. Possesses empathy and active listening skills to understand the needs and concerns of a diverse workforce.
  • Strong presentation and public speaking abilities, capable of engaging and inspiring various stakeholders
  • Proficiency in using digital communication tools and platforms, including social media, content management systems (e.g., Drupal, WordPress), and analytics tools. Familiarity with data analysis and performance metrics.
  • Experience in creating multimedia content, including videos, podcasts, and interactive media, to enhance communication efforts
  • Strong understanding of change management principles and methodologies
  • In-depth knowledge of DEI principles and best practices
  • Comprehension of well-being and resilience concepts, with the ability to translate these into operational strategies
  • Experience in creating psychological safety within a team or organization
  • Proven leadership and teamwork skills to effectively manage and develop team members. Ability to collaborate with various stakeholders, including senior leadership, staff, faculty, students, and external partners.
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to analyze complex problems, identify critical factors and potential risks, and formulate action plans. Strong decision-making capabilities with a focus on results and organizational effectiveness.
  • Flexible and able to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment. Creative problem-solver who can think outside of the box to overcome obstacles and implement innovative solutions.

  • Familiarity with Michigan Medicine, the University of Michigan Medical School, and the University of Michigan Medical Group systems, principles, policies, procedures, and standards
