Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION
The HealthySteps Specialist is an early child development expert who will join the pediatric primary care team at Woodhull's Healthy Steps Program to provide interventions, referrals, and follow-up for families with patients ages 0-5. The HealthySteps Specialist builds strong relationships with families and providers to increase the efficiency of the medical system and support team-based comprehensive care.

HealthySteps, a program of ZERO TO THREE, promotes nurturing caregiving, which supports families and improves healthy development and well-being of babies and toddlers, preparing them for school and life. The HealthySteps Specialists brings a focus to the important skills needed for families to foster healthy child development and life-long well-being: social emotional development; language and literacy skills; cognition skills; and perceptual, motor and physical development.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Primary lead role for Healthy Steps Program.
2. Conducts office visits, either jointly with the physician/pediatric nurse practitioner, or alone.
3. Conducts home visits.
4. Works closely with the pediatric providers around care coordination, goal setting, counseling, coaching, and education about key aspects of a child's development.
5. Provide referrals and tracking follow-up, as appropriate, to help families make connections to key resources within the community.
6. Conduct an ongoing system of checkups that look at both child development and family factors, as part of a health visit, as a separately scheduled office visit, or as part of an optional home visit
7. Help parents manage common behavioral concerns related to early learning, fussiness, sleep, feeding, discipline, toilet training, etc.
8. Create "teachable moments," when mothers and fathers are most receptive to information concerning their child's development and behavior.
9. Respond to developmental questions between visits either by phone, text, or email
10. Coordinate early learning activities and parent/caregiver education groups.
11. Provides Healthy Steps Play Group planning, coordination, and facilitation designed to advance opportunities for families with young children in regards to improved access to information about child development and health, care coordination, parent advocacy, and support from the Healthy Steps Specialist and other participants.
12. Provides Healthy Steps care coordination services to patients and their families.
13. Provides anticipatory guidance to parents and other primary caregivers around common concerns, such as early learning, fussiness, sleep, feeding, discipline, toilet training, etc.
14. Works closely with the pediatric team as a resource for developmental and parenting concerns.
15. Identifying and making referrals for maternal depression.
16. Use Reach Out and Read to support early literacy experiences for children.
17. Ensures quality of program data collection and reporting.
Participates in multidisciplinary treatment management team, attending Staff and Team Meetings, etc.
18. Serves as a consultant to multidisciplinary treatment team regarding psychological assessment, performs psychological, developmental assessments, and/or psycho-educational evaluations as needed. Performs Mental Status Examinations.
19. Supervises the clinical work of junior psychology staff and Psychology trainees, as assigned.
20. Participates in in service activities such as Patient Care Monitoring Conferences, Psychology Staff Meetings/In Services, and/or other departmental training activities.
21. Performs related duties such as quality assurance activities, representation in administrative meetings, as assigned by the Director of Psychological Services and/or the Medical Director of Pediatric Services

Requirements for this position include:
1. A doctoral degree from an APA-accredited clinical or school psychology program; completion of an APA-accredited internship; and current NY State license and registration.
2. At least 2 years' post-doctoral clinical experience with family, parenting, child development issues
3. Demonstrated commitment to working with underserved populations in a community setting, and the ability to work with people of many cultures.
4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
5. Demonstrated commitment to prevention-based and early intervention programming.
6. Ability to collect and analyze data for program management, evaluation, and reporting purposes.
7. Strong motivational interviewing skills.

Minimum Qualifications

For Appointment to Assignment to Level II:
1. Valid license and current registration to practice as a Psychologist issued by the NYSED; or
2. Proof of passing licensing examination and proof that completed license application, and all supporting documentation have been submitted to NYSED, which leads to licensure and registration, within six (6) months.

Department Preferences

Preferably bilingual, with demonstrated ability to speak, read, and white in Spanish, or Chinese.
